Paula Abdul exits 'X Factor'; third to leave show (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Paula Abdul joined the exodus from Fox's disappointing "The X Factor," attributing her departure to business trumping all else.

Abdul said Tuesday she won't return to "dear friend" Simon Cowell's singing contest when it begins its second season later this year. Her announcement followed Monday's exits of fellow judge Nicole Scherzinger and host Steve Jones.

"I've learned through my longevity in this industry that business decisions often times override personal considerations," Abdul said in a measured statement. She and others involved with the show understand the situation, she said, adding, "Simon is, and will remain a dear friend of mine and I've treasured" working on "X Factor."

In a separate statement, Cowell didn't address the reason for the changes but thanked the exiting trio "for everything they did last year."

Cowell and Antonio "L.A." Reid remained on the judging panel. There was no immediate word from producers on who might fill the open seats.

Cowell returned Abdul's good wishes and said he expected he and his former "American Idol" teammate would work on another project in the near future.

Despite respectable ratings, "X Factor" has failed to achieve popularity similar to Fox's "American Idol," which Cowell left to import "X Factor" from the U.K. to the U.S. He had predicted his new show would be a blockbuster.

(AP) ? A former "American Idol" contestant is heading to Broadway with a character who, it's safe to say, is truly two-faced.

Constantine Maroulis will play the title dual role in a revival of the musical "Jekyll & Hyde" that's slated to come to New York in spring 2013 after a 25-week national tour that starts in San Diego on Oct. 2, Nederlander Presentations Inc. announced Sunday.

Maroulis, who was a finalist on the fourth season of "American Idol," had a three-year run in Broadway's "Rock of Ages" and received a best actor Tony nomination and a Drama League nomination for his performance. He also played the role of Roger Davis in a recent national tour of "Rent."

Maroulis made his Broadway debut in "The Wedding Singer" and is currently in the title role of "Toxic Avenger" at the Alley Theatre in Houston. His debut album, "Constantine," was released on his own label, Sixth Place Records.

"Jekyll & Hyde" features a story and lyrics by two-time Oscar winner Leslie Bricusse and music by Frank Wildhorn, who co-conceived the musical. It will be directed and choreographed by Jeff Calhoun.

Additional cast and creative team, as well as tour cities, will be announced later.

Wildhorn has had a tough time on Broadway recently, with back-to-back shows that have failed. His show this spring called "Wonderland," an updated telling of "Alice in Wonderland," was poorly reviewed and his "Bonnie & Clyde" recently closed early this season.

"Jekyll & Hyde" made its Broadway debut in 1997 with such songs as "This is the Moment," ''A New Life" and "Someone Like You," earning four Tony nominations. It tells the story of a London doctor who accidentally unleashes his evil alternate personality in his quest to cure his father's mental illness.

Robert Cuccioli played the lead, and Sebastian Bach and David Hasselhoff later took over. After 1,543 performances, the production played its final performance on Jan. 7, 2001.

State of the Union speech, as heard by China, India, France, Israel...

State of the Union coverage in the world's newspapers says as much about the specific concerns of other countries as it does about what President Obama actually said.

When journalists from around the world report on a speech by a sitting US president ? such as President Obama?s state of the union speech last night ? they do so with their own particular reading public in mind. The effect, for a global reader, can be confusing. Did Mr. Obama really say all of this in one speech?

For Chinese readers, Obama is reported to have boasted that the US is not, repeat not, declining.

For Indian readers, Obama promised to take on China and other nations that were engaged in theft of US intellectual property.

For Israelis, Obama promised an ?ironclad? commitment to the state of Israel, as well as promises to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

For South Africans, Obama gave a feisty speech, but was largely ignored by a Republican Congress who headed for the exits.

For the French, Obama was announcing his roadmap for reelection, while for the British he gave a populist speech promising a fairer America.

From a closer reading of his one hour and six minute speech, Mr. Obama does appear to have said all of these things, and a few more. But the fact that the press in each country has its own idea of what is newsworthy in a state of the union should not be surprising. It speaks volumes about how US foreign and economic policy affects that country, for better or worse.

China?s interest in America?s future makes sense. China is the US?s second-largest trading partner, and America?s ability to kickstart its economy is crucial for China?s own prosperity. US economic weakness is bad for Chinese business.

Small wonder, then, that the China Daily ? Beijing?s main English-language newspaper ? focused its attention on Obama?s confident statement, ?The renewal of American leadership can be felt across the globe."

"Anyone who tells you otherwise, anyone who tells you that America is in decline or that our influence has waned, doesn't know what they're talking about," he said in his prime-time address.

Indian papers, meanwhile, saw in Obama?s tough words against intellectual piracy a reflection of its own rivalry with China. Both India and China have emerged as new economic and manufacturing bases, as more established economic powers in Europe and the America?s have slowed down. Both India and China have been competing for business and for resources in Africa, and both see themselves as the voice of the world?s impoverished, symbolized in their membership in the BRICS group of new economic powers (including Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa).

But for India and China, power is a zero-sum game, and India revels in any sign of trouble for China.

Suicide bomber kills 32 at Iraq funeral procession (AP)

BAGHDAD ? A suicide bomber detonated an explosives-packed car near a funeral procession in southeastern Baghdad on Friday, killing at least 32 people ? half of them policemen who were guarding the march ? in the latest brazen attack since the U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq.

Police said the bomb exploded at 11:00 a.m. in the predominantly Shiite neighborhood of Zafaraniyah, where mourners had gathered for the funeral of a person killed the day before. They said 65 people were wounded in the attack, including 16 police.

Hospital officials confirmed the death toll.

Across Iraq, at least 200 people have been killed in a wave of attacks by suspected insurgents since the beginning of the year. Erupting just weeks after completion of the U.S. military withdrawal Dec. 18, it raised concerns that the surge in violence and an escalating political crisis might deteriorate into a civil war.

Most of the dead have been Shiite pilgrims and members of the Iraqi security forces.

A sectarian-based political crisis has added to the concerns of descent into violence.

Salam Hussein, a 42-year-old grocery store owner in Zafaraniyah, said he was watching Friday's funeral procession, which was heavily guarded by police, when the blast blew out his store windows and injured one of his workers.

"It was a huge explosion," Hussein said. As he took his worker to the hospital, Hussein said he saw cars engulfed in flames, "human flesh scattered around and several mutilated bodies in a pool of blood" around the place where the attacker's car exploded.

Officials at the Zafaraniyah General Hospital, where most of the dead and injured were taken, said the powerful blast shattered windows and damaged walls in the hospital, injuring a nurse and four patients who were being treated at the time of the attack.

Zafaraniyah resident Talib Bashir, 50, said he was part of the procession of about 500 men but left the group to take his child home, and then he heard the blast.

"I saw smoke coming from a parked car that exploded," Bashir said, and police and civilians cars, an ambulance and several stores were engulfed in flames hours after the blast. "The fire lasted for a long time," Bashir said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Friday's attack.

Minutes after the explosion, gunmen opened fire at a checkpoint in Zafaraniyah, killing two police officers, according to police officials. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters.

Since the United States completed its pullout, militant groups ? mainly al-Qaida in Iraq ? have stepped up attacks targeting the country's majority Shiites to undermine confidence in the Shiite-led government and its efforts to protect people without American backup.

On Thursday, 17 people were killed in bombings around the country, including seven people in attacks on Baghdad's s two mostly Sunni districts, suggesting that Shiite militants could be retaliating for attacks against them.

Friday's blast was the second deadliest single attack in Iraq this month.

At least 53 people were killed Jan. 14, when a bomb tore through a procession of Shiite pilgrims heading toward a largely Sunni town in southern Iraq.

Official Met Office weather application available now

Android Central

One thing we aren't short of on Android is weather applications. In the UK, the Met Office are probably the best source of weather forecasts. These now come to Android with the launch of the official Met Office application.

What you get is some pretty detailed weather maps, with a range of forecasts between three hours and a full five-day forecast. The maps are also interactive, and display national severe weather warnings. It also touts UV forecast maps, for those rare days in the UK when the sun shines.

There are some known issues already with the application involving the pressure map layer. The developers have pledged that this will be resolved in a future update. In the meantime you'll find download links after the break.

Video: Can Gingrich take the GOP down?

Tanier: Patriots then hardly resemble Patriots now

Tanier: But the 2011 Patriots are not the 2001 Patriots, or the 2007 Patriots, or any of the other teams that made the Super Bowl in the last 11 years. Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are the only real constants, yet they also have changed through the years. To understand where the Patriots are now, it helps to remember, clearly, where they have been.

Rookies Newton, Dalton ready to shine in Hawaii (AP)

HONOLULU ? From the panorama of the Pacific outside his hotel window to watching NFC teammates Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees throw the ball, Cam Newton can't help but stare and be inspired by all the perfect views in paradise.

"This is unbelievable, man. This is so gratifying and just to have the opportunity to be here is a blessing," the Carolina Panthers quarterback said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Newton and fellow rookie quarterback Andy Dalton of the Cincinnati Bengals were chosen to replace Super Bowl quarterbacks Eli Manning and Tom Brady for Sunday's Pro Bowl. Their selection makes this Pro Bowl the first time in history that the all-star game will feature two rookie quarterbacks.

In fact, the only two rookie signal callers to make the Pro Bowl since 1970 are Vince Young and Dan Marino.

Newton, the No. 1 overall selection in the 2011 draft, said he's just soaking up the experience and enjoying being with his new teammates.

"I'm a fan of all these guys ? Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Clay Matthews, Larry Fitzgerald ? the list goes on with all the All-Pro guys that are here and I get to share the field with," he said.

Newton is backing up Brees and Rodgers, and doesn't mind starting on the bench.

"I idolized them throughout the year, watched so much film on them how they play the game from the check downs, to the way they throw, to everything," Newton said. "Lo and behold, we're on the same roster.

"So I'm watching and learning. What better way to learn than firsthand? I don't really don't mind, especially to these two MVP candidates. I'll be second string to that, man," he said.

Newton's season wasn't too shabby, either. He's the first quarterback ever to throw for 4,000 yards and rush for 500 yards.

He completed 310 of 517 passes for 4,051 yards, the most by a rookie quarterback in NFL history. He also threw for 21 touchdowns with 17 interceptions. His 14 rushing touchdowns are the most ever by an NFL quarterback in a season.

The Panthers missed the playoffs after finishing 6-10, but Newton promises he has a lot more to offer as his game matures.

"I've had an unbelievable and blessed year, but at the same time, I feel the best is yet to come for Cam Newton," he said. "I'm going to continue to work hard and push myself."

Looking back at game film of himself, Newton said there were things he was happy with and some things that were "disgusting to look at."

"That's why you grow into the game and watch film on yourself to see yourself now and see yourself in the future," he said.

And to Newton, the future is bright in Carolina, which is looking to become a playoff contender.

"The Carolina Panthers, coach (Ron) Rivera, (General Manager) Marty Hurney and (owner) Jerry Richardson, they have everybody's interest at heart and they're going to do what's the best for this team," Newton said. "That's something I do know and I can attest to. This team, this organization is going in the right direction to be an elite playoff team and contender year in and year out."

As for Dalton, he's already tasted the playoffs, even though it ended in a lopsided 31-10 loss to Houston in the AFC wild-card round.

Dalton threw for 3,398 yards and 20 touchdowns, leading the young Bengals (9-8) to just their third winning record and playoff appearance in the last 21 years.

Dalton still can't believe how far he's come.

"A year ago I was in Mobile, Ala., in the Senior Bowl trying to impress scouts. A year later, I'm sitting here in Hawaii at the Pro Bowl," he said. "A lot has happened and I just feel blessed to be where I am."

Dalton, a second-round selection in 2011, said making the Pro Bowl never entered his mind.

"Trying to get to the playoffs is all I was worried about. With that, I was able to get here," he said. "I feel blessed. The Lord has given me so much and it's been a big year and this is a great way to kind of end it."

Newton and Dalton greeted each other at the hotel before Wednesday's opening practice.

"We were able to come in and the teams trusted us to come in and lead the team," Dalton said. "So I think it's great. We just came out and did what we were able to do ? just be ourselves and it worked out for both of us. We both came into great situations."

Dalton is joined by three Bengals: second-year defensive tackle Geno Atkins, rookie receiver A.J. Green and second-year tight end Jermaine Gresham.

"For us to be here with four guys in their first, second year, it shows the kind of young talent we have," Dalton said. "I think all four of us here, just to be around these guys that have been to the Pro Bowl a lot, it's great for us and gives us a little exposure and we can build upon this."

Newton and Dalton said they haven't experienced much hazing yet. But sometimes rookies have big food and beverage tabs that left to their rooms. So Newton will be trying to keep his room number quiet.

"Hopefully nobody tries anything," Newton said. "I'm hoping for the best."

Rape, corruption in camps blight lives of Somali displaced (Reuters)

MOGADISHU (AlertNet) ? Nurto Isak's food rations are feeding her, her three children, and -- she suspects -- the militiamen guarding the camp in Mogadishu where she and other uprooted Somalis have taken refuge.

The city is host to more than 180,000 internally displaced people (IDPs) who, like Isak, have fled a killer combination of conflict, drought and hunger back home.

Many risk long, difficult journeys to reach the capital, their sights set on the numerous aid agencies that have set up relief operations to hand out food and treat malnutrition there.

Yet many people at various IDP settlements in the war-torn city complain that food aid is not reaching them and accuse local aid workers working for international and Somali NGOs of taking it to line their own pockets.

"Half of the rations intended for our camp is given to the warlord whose militia are said to be guarding us," Isak told AlertNet (www.trust.org/alertnet), a humanitarian news service run by Thomson Reuters Foundation.

Many of the displaced said women were being raped in camps, while others lamented a lack of jobs, health clinics and schools despite the increased presence of aid groups.

Six months after famine was declared in parts of Somalia, the Horn of Africa country remains in the grip of a humanitarian crisis, with 4 million people in need of aid, according to U.N. figures.

However, fighting between government forces and Islamist rebels, combined with attacks on aid workers and a history of aid being manipulated for political gain, means Somalia is one of the toughest countries for relief agencies to operate in.

As such, it is a classic case study of the obstacles to effective aid as highlighted in an AlertNet poll of 41 leading relief agencies published on Thursday.

In the survey, more than half the experts cited increasingly complex disasters as one of the biggest challenges to aid delivery -- with the use of aid as a political weapon and violence against relief workers also featuring highly.

Last month two staff working for Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) were shot dead by a colleague in Mogadishu, while earlier this month the International Committee of the Red Cross suspended food distribution to 1.1 million people after al Shabaab rebels blocked deliveries to areas under the militant group's control.

"This is one of the most complex environments for humanitarians," said U.N. humanitarian coordinator for Somalia, Mark Bowden, in response to the claims by displaced people that food rations were being sold by local aid workers.

"Despite continued efforts to strengthen our monitoring systems, allegations still and will continue," he said in a statement to AlertNet.

FAST BUCK

Some of the IDP camps -- little more than a clutch of flimsy shelters made of sticks and cloth -- are directly and indirectly run by government forces or warlords linked to the government, residents say.

Shukri Aden, a resident at another camp, said she had witnessed traders buying food supplies directly from a number of local staff working for NGOs and aid agencies responsible for distributing food in her camp.

"Traders park their cars and lorries beside the camp when it is food distribution day," the mother of six said.

Once a month residents of the camps are handed a card that allows them to collect 25 kg of rice, 25 kg of wheat flour, 10 kg of sugar and 5 liters of cooking oil, Aden said.

But often they are pressured into handing their rations to a local aid worker who pays them around $5 each -- hardly enough to buy food for a day.

The aid worker then sells the food at a marked-up price to a trader, earning thousands of dollars in profits, she said.

"They give us cards to take food but we rarely receive the ration," said Aden, who has taken to begging and washing clothes to scrape together a few more shillings to feed her family.

RAPED AT GUNPOINT

A few miles away in Dinsoor IDP camp, Kadija Mohamed, 36, told AlertNet she was raped.

"Three armed men in government uniform came into the camp. The strongest one shone a powerful torch in my eyes, he strangled me and then raped me in front of my crying kids," she said.

Mohamed, a widow, said she waited for sunrise before making her way to a nearby clinic only to be told there were no doctors.

"Later the camp leaders brought me some painkillers. Now I'm OK but I do not know what diseases I caught from the rape. I have nowhere to go for a check-up," Mohamed said. "We live in these makeshift shelters. We have no aid agency or government to protect us at night. We are at God's mercy."

Isak also said rape was common in her camp.

"They rape even mothers at gunpoint at night -- and we are threatened to death should we disclose it," she said. "The makeshift shelters have no lockable doors, so these men just come in at night and lie on you."

In its January 18 report, the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said sexual violence against women and girls was continuing in Somalia. It also said security in the IDP settlements was insufficient and at risk of deteriorating.

QUESTION OF PRIORITIES

Mohamed's brother, Macalim Ibrahim, 40, reserved his biggest criticism for government officials and local aid workers.

"These local aid workers are building houses with the sale of food intended for the poor displaced people like us," he told AlertNet. "We are deprived and yet have no government or aid agencies to ask for help."

He also questioned the effectiveness of some of the aid that has been given.

"Many NGOs come, take our photos, and never come back. For example, one aid agency came and erected this school building made of iron sheets," Ibrahim said.

"We brought our kids to the school but it did not work more than 7 days. The guys took footage of the kids at school and never came back. And the teachers disappeared.

"Other aid agencies came and built these latrines. That is good but a hungry man never goes to the toilet. We need food and water to survive," he said.

iBooks 2 and card.io payments lead iOS Apps of the Week (Appolicious)

It may be the middle of the school year, but this week?s top iPhone apps will get you back in the learning spirit thanks to some apps that are offering online courses and inexpensive digital textbooks. For those who checked out of school long ago, there are some good apps to help you relax and keep yourself entertained, too.

Students with heavy backpacks everywhere take note, iBooks 2 might just change your life. Apple?s updated iBooks app now features multi-touch textbooks for as low as $14.99 a book. The app will remain free, of course. As good as those prices are, I?m sure some relief from the considerable strain of heavy textbooks will be even better news for iPad owners still attending classes regularly.

Accepting credit card payments just got a little easier with card.io payments. You can accept payments from people simply by using your iPhone camera to take a picture of their credit card. The app then takes the information on the card and securely accepts the payment designated. There are no setup or monthly fees to use the card.io payments service but the app does take a 3.5% cut on all purchases plus an additional 30 cents per sale.

Working nicely in concert with iBook 2, iTunes U presents users with the opportunity to take free courses from numerous universities like Stanford, Yale, MIT and more. The app offers over 500,000 lectures and texts on all sorts of subjects. Now you can take a course on iTunes U and maybe grab a companion textbook from iBooks 2 if you feel like reading on!

If you?ve ever been to a gas station where short TV show clips played as you pumped your gas, you have a pretty good idea of how TouchTV works. The app offers up short news clips and bits of TV shows on your iPad. If you don?t have the time to watch a whole news broadcast but want to get a quick story in, now you can do so quickly, skipping right to the story you?re most interested in. Channels like E!, ESPN, OWN, National Geographic, ABC, and NBC are among those currently supporting TouchTV, with more sure to follow.

If you?re looking for a robust yoga app that you can use even where your iPhone doesn?t get much of a signal, All Yoga is up to the task. It features hundreds of poses with step-by-step images and instructions breaking down each pose. All of the poses are loaded right in the app so you don?t need a 3G or Wi-Fi signal to check them out, either. All Yoga also comes with a calendar feature so you can chart and track your progress as you attempt to attain some spiritual balance in your daily routine.

US Sen. Brown kicks off campaign re-election bid (AP)

WORCESTER, Mass. ? U.S. Sen. Scott Brown officially kicked off his re-election campaign Thursday, casting his chief Democratic opponent Elizabeth Warren as an ideologue and pledging to be an independent voice in a deeply partisan Congress.

Brown, speaking to a crowd of cheering supporters at Mechanics Hall in the Worcester, said he would continue to oppose the health care law signed by President Barack Obama and would fight against wasteful government spending.

The Massachusetts Republican timed his Thursday evening event to coincide with the anniversary of his special election win in 2010 that catapulted him into the office once held by the late Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy.

Brown also criticized what he called "establishment candidates" who try to divide Americans for political gain.

"They'll wage class warfare, pitting one group of Americans against another," Brown said. "They will attack success, and our free enterprise system. They will use terms like `us' and `them.'"

Brown, who is facing a tough re-election campaign in a state that typically favors Democrats, has tried to position himself as the underdog in the race, despite his incumbent status and a campaign war chest more than twice as large as Warren.

Brown, who welcomed tea party support during his special election campaign two years ago, has gone on to break with his party on several key votes, including his support of a Democrat-backed overhaul of the nation's financial system. Brown's backing of a repeal of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" ban on gays serving openly also drew criticism.

Most recently Brown decided to support Obama's decision to name Richard Cordray as the nation's chief consumer watchdog despite the objections of most Senate Republicans.

Brown has pointed to those votes as proof of his independent streak.

"I told the voters that I wouldn't just be another loud, angry partisan," Brown said. "I don't worry about the party line. I don't get caught up in petty fights."

Brown's victory stunned Massachusetts Democrats, particularly because the seat had been held by nearly half a century by Kennedy. Brown famously used that connection when he declared that the seat was the "people's seat" and not the Kennedy seat.

Reclaiming that seat has become the top goal of Democrats. Many are placing their hopes on Warren, the consumer advocate and Harvard professor who helped launch the new federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

While Brown enjoys an overall money advantage with $12.8 million in cash on hand, Warren collected more than $6 million as of Jan. 1, pulling in more than Brown during the final three months of 2011.

Warren's campaign said she had raised at least an additional $1.1 million Thursday during a "money bomb" fundraising effort from midnight to 9 p.m.

Warren was in Worcester on Thursday, shaking hands with diners at the Nu Cafe.

Responding to a portion of Brown's speech emailed to reporters ahead of the address, Warren brushed aside the criticism that she is trying to pit Americans against each other.

"This is the standard Republican play book right now," Warren said. "He is echoing the same things that every other Republican is saying every time a camera's turned on. I don't think the people of Massachusetts are going to be persuaded by that."

Warren added to her fundraiser total on Thursday with an online "money bomb" pegged to Brown's announcement. A money bomb allows supporters to pledge money via the Internet during a narrow window of time, with all the online "checks" cashed on the same day.

By Thursday, the amount pledged to Warren totaled more than $1 million. In the 2010 special election, Brown raised $1.3 million using a similar "money bomb" tactic.

While the race is widely expected to be the most expensive in state history, Warren and Brown are also taking the unusual step of trying to broker a deal to keep third party groups from sponsoring attack ads during the campaign.

Last week, Brown said he and Warren should sign a binding agreement to make hefty donations to charity if outside groups launch television, broadcast or online ads supporting their campaigns or attacking their rival.

Warren said she hoped to strike an even tougher agreement. She said she would like to see the two sign a joint agreement to be sent to all third party groups notifying them of the deal. She said the deal should specifically include radio ads and the candidates should ask broadcast outlets to help honor the deal.

Top staffers from both campaigns were expected to meet Friday to try to hammer out the details of an agreement.

What still isn't clear is how Brown or Warren could block the ads.

By their nature, the political action committees and outside groups that pay for the ads must work independently of the candidates and their campaigns. Federal election law explicitly bans candidates from coordinating with the committees on advertising.

Warren said it's still worth a shot.

"It's an effort to try to change the environment for third party groups," Warren said Thursday. "This is important and it's worth trying to do something to try to keep them out."

Warren still must win the state's Democratic primary in September. She is being challenged by other Democratic candidates including Marisa DeFranco, an immigration lawyer from Middleton, and James King, a lawyer from Dover.

(AP) ? A man accused of scaling the fence of Halle Berry's house will remain in jail after pleading no contest to stalking the Oscar-winning actress.

Deputy District Attorney Wendy Segall says Richard A. Franco was sentenced to serve 386 days in county jail Thursday, but he has already served half the term.

The 28-year-old was also placed on five years' probation, a year of psychological counseling and ordered to stay away from the actress for the next decade.

Franco was arrested outside Berry's home in July after repeatedly coming onto her property. In one instance, the actress stated in a sworn declaration that Franco attempted to enter her kitchen, but she was able to lock the door before he got inside.

A burglary charge filed against Franco was dropped.

Insight: EU banks shrink; Irish farmers, Qatari bosses flinch (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? From his idyllic farm in Ireland's lush Wicklow Hills, Colin Hadden hatched a plan to supply his lean, grass-fed specialty lamb to some of Dublin's finest restaurants.

Over the last two years, his small business boomed, taking on 15 people and opening a butcher shop and food hall. That was before his bank halved his overdraft facility to 50,000 euros.

"They are literally making life impossible," said Hadden, who has been forced to ask suppliers for loans and provide credit to his restaurant customers, who are also suffering as EU banks shrink and the debt crisis bites.

"They are acting as debt collectors rather than banks. They are squeezing the life out of my business," Hadden told Reuters.

Hadden thinks his business, Ballyshonog Farm Foods, will survive the next year but is less confident about the future. "If you don't have credit you don't have a business," he said.

The pattern of banks withdrawing lines of credit, or "deleveraging" in banking terms, is being repeated across Ireland and Europe as well as further afield.

And it's not just the small firms that are scrambling.

Ballyshonog's hill farming may be a far cry from ship building in the yards of Denmark or pumping gas in the deserts of Qatar but small businesses and industrial conglomerates alike are all feeling the pain as European banks cut off loans.

Danish shipping group Torm is in talks to avert takeover as it struggles to reschedule $1.8 billion of bank debt.

One week before Christmas a $10-billion Qatari gas project had to find new lenders after big French banks that have worked with Qatar for years turned their backs on the deal.

Such is the reality of a huge pullback around the world in lending by Europe's banks in reaction to the debt crisis.

Deleveraging is wrenching the corporate world, threatening auto, aviation and shipping industries, hurting trade and project finance, and shaking up the financing landscape.

LENDING BINGE

The crisis has revealed the extent of the banks' decade-long lending binge and exposed eye-watering levels of debt, as well as a startlingly creaky financial system.

As a result, regulators are now insisting on tougher rules and have demanded that banks hold more capital to protect their balance sheets if things get worse.

The new rules have forced lenders to re-assess their clients more rigorously and either tear up lending agreements completely or attach higher costs to loans and funding.

Europe's banks are preparing to ditch up to 3 trillion euros of loans in the next couple of years as they "deleverage" their balance sheets, roughly 5-7 percent of those banks' assets.

As a result businesses must pay more to borrow money, leaving some firms scrambling to stay afloat and increasing the cost of their goods to consumers.

This is hitting Europe's economy hard, but may also derail growth in Asia and recovery in the United States.

"At this point it looks like being very disruptive in the short term ... the credit squeeze could be quite violent," said Nicolas Veron, a senior fellow at Brussels think-tank Bruegel.

That squeeze means banks will retrench to their home markets and fewer, safer clients at the expense of global trade. But it also marks an opportunity for Japanese, U.S., Canadian and Asia-focused banks to profit by picking up the slack.

FRENCH RETREAT

Those banks in worst trouble have been scaling back lending for the last three years.

Troubled Royal Bank of Scotland has shed 600 billion pounds of assets and scaled back its investment bank after over-ambitious acquisitions left it close to collapse.

The retreat from lending was accelerated by France's big banks -- some of whom had been the most aggressive lenders.

In the past six months BNP Paribas and Societe Generale have scaled back many loan deals, disappointing those trying to nurture or expand their business out of recession, or seeking to tap into Asian growth.

In order to cut the demands on them to hold more capital, these banks are cutting their risk-weighted assets -- a measure of their real-world exposure to potential losses.

BNP and SocGen, Deutsche Bank and Barclays, and Credit Suisse and UBS have all said they plan to shed tens of billions of euros of assets to deal with the financial chaos, and most of their peers are on a similar path.

"Banks are retrenching in terms of where they are writing business and where they are sourcing their funds," said James Longsdon, co-head of EMEA financial institutions at credit ratings agency Fitch.

He estimated European banks had shrunk their risk-weighted assets by 2-3 percent last year. "That could certainly accelerate," he said.

With no clear resolution in sight for the euro zone sovereign debt crisis, and a record 725 billion euros of debt due to mature this year, Europe's banks are likely to keep a strict risk-free hold-down on funding requests.

Big banks must also meet tougher regulations from the European Banking Authority by the end of June.

The EBA wants banks to hold a minimum 9 percent in core capital, a measure of a bank's financial strength which consists mainly of common stock and retained earnings. But with an eye on the murky economic weather, investors want banks to stash more protective capital than is strictly required.

If Europe's top banks were to aim for core capital of 10 percent, they would need to raise 180 billion euros, or cut their risk-weighted assets by 1.5 trillion euros, according to Reuters estimates. Based on an average risk-weighting of 50 percent per bank, that would mean 3 trillion euros being cut.

Lenders have several options at their disposal, including raising equity, cutting dividends or pay, or selling assets.

RBS this week sold its aircraft leasing business for $7.3 billion to Japan's Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group and has also offloaded a $6 billion portfolio of project finance loans to Mitsubishi UFJ.

Many assets are proving hard to dispose of in an environment where entrepreneurs are loathe to invest. Banks cannot afford to sell at a loss so most are taking the option of shedding loans.

"The low hanging fruit has been plucked, now it's the harder stuff," said one senior loans banker, explaining that banks are now cutting the number of firms they will lend to, or scaling back on loans, even to firms they have worked with for years.

EVERYBODY HURTS

Big French banks have in the past been known for bankrolling project financing in the Middle East. But in late 2011 they were not among the more than 20 firms who provided a $7.2 billion loan for Qatar Petroleum's Barzan gas project.

A warning came in August that year when BNP and Commerzbank refused to join 10 banks providing a $12-billion loan to SABMiller, despite having a relationship with one of the world's leading brewers, which operates on six continents.

More recently, Qatar Airways failed to attract its usual European bankers to finance its purchase of two Boeing aircraft. HSBC stepped in to complete its first financing deal with the airline for five years.

Projects backed by wealthy Qatar or loans for investment grade companies are finding other banks willing to step in, keen to get a foothold with a potentially lucrative client for when economic times improve.

But it will be increasingly hard for less stellar borrowers.

"Where a corporate has had a rocky couple of years and the outlook still isn't that strong, those guys could struggle to get refinancing," one banker in the Middle East said.

Banks are most keen to cut loose from projects denominated in U.S. dollars, which have become much more expensive for them to fund after American money market funds alarmed by the growing European debt crisis severely cut back their lending.

This has serious implications for areas such as trade and project finance and aviation and shipping, where European banks like Deutsche Bank, BNP, UniCredit, Credit Agricole, Commerzbank, ING and SocGen rank among the top lenders, according to Thomson Reuters data.

There are also worries about the knock-on impact of the banks shrinking their lending on other industries.

Some banks could quit auto financing completely. With three-quarters of EU car sales dependent on bank credit, that could leave carmakers needing to plug the funding gap themselves or prepare for lower sales, analysts warn.

Indeed, Morgan Stanley analysts estimate auto demand suffers badly in deleveraging markets, with demand for cars taking at least 5-7 years to recover from pre-crisis levels.

ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVE

The lending void left by European banks will not stay empty for long, however. Stronger global banks and local lenders are already stepping up to take advantage of the opportunity to grab market share and set advantageous lending rates.

Data from Thomson Reuters LPC shows seismic shifts in the ranks of global loan providers already.

Japan's megabanks on average have already trebled their lending in 2011 as they sought growth outside a stagnant domestic market and benefited from domestic economic conditions to fund themselves relatively cheaply.

Mizuho Financial Group jumped to fifth spot from 11th in the global loans table and was joined by SMFG and Mitsubishi UFJ in the top ten.

Lending by U.S. banks also jumped, and the top three spots were filled by JP Morgan, Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Citigroup.

All the European banks in the top 20 slipped down the rankings, with the exception of Asia-focused HSBC.

Richard Meddings, finance director of Standard Chartered, told Reuters last month he expected to win market share and reprice business at a higher level as a result of aggressive deleveraging by Western banks.

But the stronger banks will be choosy and deploy capital where it gets them a new area or client, and bosses want to see hard evidence it will create a lucrative new relationship.

Japanese banks stepped in to lend to Russia's Gazprom when French lenders recently retreated, bankers said. Japan is dependent on Russian LNG exports and has an eye on potential projects in Russia's Pacific regions where project financing may be needed.

Indian, Chinese and Korean banks are not aggressively chasing deals, but are stepping in on loans where they have a trading link to the company or country.

Others capital providers could also step in, such as private equity firms which are cash-rich and have more than $700 billion to deploy, according to data provider Preqin.

Companies are also expected to turn more to bond markets for their cash, shifting closer to the U.S. market model where companies rely more on raising debt and less on bank loans.

Demonstrating the search for alternatives, Italian power company Edipower said two days before Christmas that it would go to its shareholders to refinance a 1 billion euro loan, after failing to renew the loan with banks on attractive terms.

EIGHT YEARS OF PAIN?

How widespread the impact of deleveraging on the recovery of the industrialized world will be, and how long it will last, draws contrasting views.

Politicians are talking tough about limiting the pain of emerging from recession by telling banks to slow the process of deleveraging, but their influence may just limit how far banks reduce domestic lending and not their overseas retreat.

Germany's Commerzbank has already said it will only lend in its home market and Poland.

Politicians and governments will also be caught in the squeeze, as banks sell their sovereign debt, hardly helping confidence in the euro zone's economic stability.

Banks cut their net exposure to the sovereign debt of Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal and Spain by 50 billion euros in the first nine months of last year, according to bank disclosures.

And there are warnings that the process has only just begun and will be more severe than past credit crunches -- such as in the United States, Sweden, Hong Kong and Japan -- which have typically led to a 6-7 year decline in lending.

The problem for Europe is that banks, governments and households are all cutting back at the same time, after a jump in public and private indebtedness since the mid-1980s.

"It will be long and drawn out ... it looks like being an eight year process at least," said Andrew Lim, analyst at Espirito Santo.

Apple files German lawsuit against Samsung, targets Galaxy S II, nine other smartphones

With patent infringement accusations going every which way in recent months, we're certainly familiar with Apple/Samsung banter in the international arena. Now Apple has thrown yet another punch at the Korean smartphone maker, targeting its Galaxy S II, Galaxy S Plus and eight other handsets, claiming -- yes, you've got it -- patent infringement. The suit was filed in Dusseldorf Regional Court -- the same venue that the company used to target the Galaxy Tab 10.1N, which was created specifically to sidestep a September injunction, also in Germany. It's becoming rather difficult to keep track of all the IP hubbub across the pond, but we'll surely be back with more as soon as the German court has a ruling to share.

Obama to accept nomination at Charlotte stadium (AP)

CHARLOTTE, N.C. ? President Barack Obama plans to accept the Democratic presidential nomination in the open air of Bank of America Stadium on the final day of his party's convention next summer in Charlotte, N.C.

Democrats also announced plans to shorten the convention from the traditional four days to three to make room for a day to celebrate the Carolinas, Virginia and the South. The convention opens on Labor Day at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Obama will accept the nomination on Sept. 6. Moving his acceptance speech allows the party to open its doors to tens of thousands of activists at the 74,000-seat stadium, which is the home to the NFL's Carolina Panthers.

In 2008, Obama accepted his party's nomination under the open skies of Denver's Invesco Field.

BREAKINGVIEWS-Samsung's $41 bln binge may shake Apple's tree

Wed Jan 18, 2012 9:54am GMT

(The author is a Reuters Breakingviews columnist. The opinions expressed are his own)

By Wayne Arnold

HONG KONG, Jan 18 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Samsung?s (005930.KS) $41 billion investment splurge should ring alarm bells at its competitors. At least half of the Korean conglomerate?s planned outlays will probably go to expanding its global lead in smartphones and the chips and screens that drive them. It?s a bold bet in a slowdown, if its bet pays off Samsung could lengthen its lead over the likes of Apple (AAPL.O).

Samsung Electronics hasn?t announced just how much it plans to invest from the parent group's big number. But if history is any guide, its share should be at least $21 billion for expanding production and R&D. Relative to forecast annual revenue, that?s about 26 percent more than what Apple plans to invest this year. Competitors should worry, because chances are Samsung won?t put that into microwaves and dishwashers, but rather into its more profitable smartphones and flash memory.

Korea's tech companies have made great strides against Japanese and U.S. rivals. A falling currency -- the won has weakened 60 percent against the yen over 20 years -- helped the likes of Samsung break into the global consumer electronics market. Now, the company is the world?s largest maker of televisions, memory chips and smartphones. It leads the market for flash memory drives and state-of-the-art digital screens, so it not only competes with Apple but supplies it with parts.

Spending 13 percent of revenue on capex and R&D may seem risky in a slowing global economy, but Samsung can afford it. It has an estimated $10 billion in net cash on the balance sheet according to Daiwa, and forecast EBITDA of $29 billion for 2012. The company?s plans to take advantage of low U.S. interest rates to borrow $1 billion in five-year bonds shows it is considering building a more aggressive balance sheet.

The big risk is that in such a fickle, fashion-driven market as smartphones, even big investment budgets can go into the wrong ideas. Ask Motorola, Nokia or Research In Motion. But given that the smartphone market is still forecast to grow by 34 percent this year, Samsung deserves the benefit of the doubt.

-- South Korea?s largest conglomerate, the Samsung Group, said Jan. 16 it would increase investment by 12 percent in 2012 to a record 47.8 trillion won (roughly $41.6 billion). It didn't provide a breakdown of its investment plans by business division, but said it is looking to expand investment into new growth areas despite heightened uncertainties stemming from the global economic downturn.

-- Samsung said it would spend 31 trillion won on facilities investment, an 11 percent increase from last year, while outlays for research and development would rise 13 percent to 13.6 trillion won. The group, which spent 42.8 trillion won last year, said the remainder will go toward other investment tools, such as stake purchases.

-- Samsung Electronics Jan. 15 its U.S. operation was considering selling around $1 billion in bonds, its first major overseas debt sale in more than a decade, to fund operations at a chip plant in Austin, Texas. Samsung, which supplies semiconductors to Apple's iPhone and iPad tablet, has sent requests for proposals to banks for the potential sale of five-year bonds, a Samsung spokesman said.

Use a Wooden Spoon to Stop Pots from Boiling Over [Macgyver Tips]

Use a Wooden Spoon to Stop Pots from Boiling OverA watched pot never boils, but an unwatched pot can go from boiling to overflowing pretty quickly. Redditor slokotkov shows us one way to keep your pot from boiling over.

When you put a pot of water on, put a wooden spoon over the top of the pot. If it starts to boil up too high, the spoon will pop the bubbles and keep it from boiling over as quickly, meaning you have more time to get back and turn the heat down. Note that this could warp a wooden spoon, so do it with a utensil you don't want as much. Alternatively, you could use something metal, but you'd have to remove it with an oven mitt because it will become very hot (unlike wood, which won't transfer as much heat). Hit the link to read more.

Swift teases songs about heartbreak on next album (AP)

NEW YORK ? Should Jake Gyllenhaal be worried?

Taylor Swift graces the cover of Vogue's February issue and tells the magazine her next album will be about an "absolute crash-and-burn heartbreak" she experienced.

The 22-year-old singer doesn't name names, but she did date Gyllenhaal for a few months in 2010, and he broke up with her.

Swift says it helps her to "feel better" and gain "clarity" by writing songs about her relationships.

She also says she now has a list of "red flags" for if a relationship won't work: If a guy falls in love with her based on her Wikipedia page, is threatened that she needs security, puts her down or is obsessed with privacy, they're not for her.

The February issue of Vogue magazine goes on sale January 24.

Romney rivals seek SC theme, champion to stop him (AP)

CHARLESTON, S.C. ? With a week left to halt Mitt Romney from sweeping to a third straight victory, his GOP rivals are struggling in South Carolina for a theme, momentum and most crucially, one strong challenger to consolidate conservatives' misgivings about the front-runner.

The dynamics that lifted Romney to wins in Iowa and New Hampshire seem to be working for him here, even though South Carolina is often described as too evangelical and culturally southern for his background.

In some ways, the former Massachusetts governor is lucky, benefitting from a fractured opposition that has divided the anti-Romney vote for months. In other ways he is benefiting from shrewd and well-organized supporters. He uses TV ads to shore up his weaknesses and to batter the rivals he sees as most threatening.

In Iowa, the target was former House speaker Newt Gingrich, who plummeted under the barrage. In South Carolina, it's former Sen. Rick Santorum, a longtime champion of home-schooling, anti-abortion efforts and other social conservative causes.

Santorum nearly won the Iowa caucus, and some consider him the best bet for unifying the anti-Romney vote.

But a private group that supports Romney is pounding Santorum in South Carolina with TV ads and mailings. So is Rep. Ron Paul, the libertarian-leaning candidate who helped attack Gingrich in Iowa.

Paul's ads are especially harsh. They vilify Santorum for pushing pork-barrel projects as a Pennsylvania senator, and they portray him as an insincere conservative.

A group of social conservative leaders meeting in Texas voted Saturday to recommend Santorum as the Romney alternative. But a portion of them preferred Gingrich, who denied Santorum a two-thirds majority on their first head-to-head ballot, said Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council.

Perkins said the group's actions did not constitute an endorsement, adding that some participants will remain Gingrich supporters. He declined to say how he voted.

"Santorum was the preferred candidate by a significant majority," former presidential candidate Gary Bauer told The Associated Press by telephone from Texas. "They were all looking for the best Reagan conservative," he said. "It came down to things like, who do you most trust."

The Texas vote is obviously good news for Santorum. But it's unclear how much impact it will have in South Carolina's primary on Saturday.

The state is known for campaign surprises, and there's still time for twists and turns. Undercurrents of anti-Romney sentiment, perhaps fueled by his Mormonism, could be stronger than they seem.

But on the surface, at least, Romney is well-positioned with a week to go. If he wins South Carolina, only a seismic change in the campaign will keep him from becoming the nominee.

The next primary, on Jan. 31, is in Florida, a sprawling and expensive state where Romney's superior money and organization could essentially put the matter to rest, kicking off the general election against President Barack Obama.

"Romney is in good shape now, but the race is tightening," said LaDonna Ryggs, Spartanburg County GOP chairwoman.

There is little evidence that a barrage of ads depicting Romney as a heartless corporate raider is having much effect. He is airing a counter-ad defending his record at Bain Capital, which sometimes created jobs, and sometimes reduced them, when it restructured dozens of companies in the 1980s and `90s.

"That's what his job was, and he did it well," said Carleen Coffey, 51, who defended Romney even as she attended an event for Texas Gov. Rick Perry in Charleston.

The anti-Romney ad, aired by a group supporting Gingrich, has generated much comment in political and media circles. Many conservative leaders have condemned it, and Gingrich later back-pedaled, questioning the accuracy of the anti-Romney documentary film behind it.

For ordinary South Carolina Republicans, however, the ad risks being lost in an avalanche of TV commercials, which many voters say they ignore.

Romney's campaign events run like clockwork, while his opponents often suffer glitches and modest crowds. Gingrich, in particular, has left people scratching their heads.

He spoke at a home-ownership rally Thursday in Columbia that appeared to be dominated by Democratic speakers and attendees. Gingrich got a big introduction at a GOP barbecue Friday in Duncan, but he inexplicably didn't show up for many minutes. Santorum jumped into the void, working the room and getting valuable one-on-one time with voters.

Then on Saturday, Gingrich's scheduled telephone conference with voters never took place. The dial-in number was invalid.

Perry has faded. Once seen having a good chance to beat Romney in South Carolina, the drawling Texan is drawing small crowds at cafes and restaurants. Saturday morning in Mount Pleasant, about half the people at Page's Okra Grill didn't bother to stop eating or talking while Perry spoke in a corner.

The TV attack ads in South Carolina skip Perry. It's a sign of his perceived insignificance, although he could benefit if the others slice each other up.

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman is getting even less attention.

Some people think Santorum is rising, but the attack ads might slow him. Santorum's boyish looks have always boosted his image as a principled crusader for unborn children and other causes. But the ads being aired by Paul's campaign and the pro-Romney group depict him as a conniving, old-fashioned politician who grabbed federal money for his state whenever possible.

"Some people are going to be swayed," said Alexia Newman, a South Carolina GOP activist and Santorum supporter. "If you know about his records, you know the ads are false," she said. But that requires Santorum to break through the noise and clutter of political commercials flooding the airwaves.

The pro-Romney PAC, Restore Our Future, is running $1 million in ads in the state this week, and more than $800,000 next week. Not all of them target Santorum, however. Santorum's campaign and a PAC that backs him are running pro-Santorum ads.

No single issue is dominating the primary. That makes it harder for any one Romney opponent to catch fire.

Religion and the military play bigger roles here than in Iowa, and especially New Hampshire. Romney has worked hard to address both.

He has built several events around military service, starting with his Veterans' Day trip to South Carolina last November. He has been campaigning lately with Sen. John McCain, the 2008 presidential nominee and Vietnam War hero.

As for religion, Romney has tried to portray himself as a moral and faithful man, without going into details of Mormonism. On Friday, a woman in Hilton Head asked him, "Do you believe in the divine saving grace of Jesus Christ?"

"Yes, I do," Romney replied, adding: "Our nation was founded on the principle...of religious tolerance and liberty in this land, and so we welcome people of other faiths."

Romney's campaign has produced a Web ad in which an anti-abortion activist endorses him. Romney supported abortion rights as Massachusetts governor.

Romney's main worries might involve currents he can't see. South Carolina has a reputation for dirty campaign tricks, although many Republicans here say it's mostly a thing of the past.

Whatever the case, an anonymous group has sent a text message purporting to be a Romney campaign item. But callers hear Romney being criticized on abortion.

Special guest referees: Not so black and white

Eyebrows across the WWE Universe were raised when Executive Vice President of Talent Relations and Interim Raw General Manager John Laurinaitis named himself special guest referee in the WWE Championship Match between CM Punk and Dolph Ziggler at the 25th anniversary of the Royal Rumble on Jan. 29.

Because of the Interim GM?s rocky relationship with CM Punk, the WWE Universe is left to wonder what role Laurinaitis might play in determining the WWE Championship. Despite being true to his word and banning Jack Swagger and Vickie Guerrero from ringside at the Rumble, the WWE Universe is left unconvinced of Mr. Laurinaitis's ability to remain impartial ? at least according to numerous posts on Facebook and Twitter. If he does work his way into deciding the outcome of the match, just how stacked will the deck be against The Second City Savior with the title on the line? For that matter, should Dolph Ziggler feel all that comfortable with the new guest referee? After all, Laurinaitis lived up to his word on the Jan. 9 Raw SuperShow, and banned both Jack Swagger and Vickie Guerrero from ringside. (MATCH PREVIEW)

As history has shown, when a WWE authority figure works him or herself into a guest officiating role during an important match, there's just no telling what might happen. Though it?s a pretty safe bet that in their WWE Championship Match at the Royal Rumble, either the champion or challenger will not be happy with the guest official?s final decision. WWE.com looks back on some of the more memorable instances of an authority figure-turned-referee costing a Superstar big time.

HBK turns the tables on The Rock: With the WWE Championship on the line, The Rock and Triple H did battle on the premiere episode of SmackDown on Aug. ?26, 1999. Shawn Michaels ? who was acting WWE Commissioner at the time ? served as special guest referee and entered the arena to a huge ovation from the capacity crowd in Kansas City. But as the match played out, it would become clear that The Heartbreak Kid had intentions of living up to his moniker that night.

After a brutal struggle, The Great One took control of the match, hitting Triple H with the Rock Bottom and preparing for The People?s Elbow. The crowd grew raucous as The People's Champion hit the first rope and jumped over the prone Triple H. But the sickening sound of Sweet Chin Music suddenly stopped The Rock in his tracks, and shocked the WWE Universe. The Game then staggered over to Rock, hooked his arms, and connected with a Pedigree that sealed the match ? and the title ? for The Cerebral Assassin. (WATCH)

Vickie Guerrero, a not-so-impartial observer: In a match to determine the WWE Women?s Championship on Feb. 26, 2010, Mickie James faced an uphill battle against not only the nearly 6-foot-tall Michelle McCool, but the special guest referee ? none other than SmackDown General Manager Vickie Guerrero.

With the GM planted squarely in her corner, a confident McCool stalked Mickie James. Mickie found an advantage, though, and rolled McCool up for a cover. SmackDown?s GM was in no hurry to count to three, however, and instead unleashed on Mickie a vicious slap to the face that echoed throughout the arena. The GM-turned-referee broke the count and knocked James for a loop. As Mickie got up in Guerrero?s grill, McCool went on the offensive, rolled up her opponent, and was declared the new Champion. Vickie?s interference cost Mickie James the match ? and the Women?s Title. (WATCH)

No Way Out for Triple H: At No Way Out in 2002, Triple H and Kurt Angle met in a memorable contest with The Game?s title opportunity at WrestleMania on the line. Stephanie McMahon had declared herself special guest referee, and from the moment Angle stepped in the ring, it was obvious who she was rooting for.

After a series of quick counts, it was clear The Game would have his work cut out for him if he wanted to retain his title opportunity. Things started to look up for Triple H, however, when Angle ran at him with a monster clothesline near the ropes. The Cerebral Assassin ducked the blow, sending Angle straight into Stephanie and knocking her over the ropes ? and seemingly out of the match.

A more traditional officiator took Stephanie?s place, but Triple H wasn?t out of the woods yet ? not by a long shot. After Angle disposed of the new ref, Stephanie found her way back to the ring, only to be knocked out again. She eventually came to ? and just in time to ignore two illegal chair blasts by Angle, costing Triple H his chance at the title. (PHOTOS)

Former Penn State coach Joe Paterno hospitalized (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Legendary Penn State University football coach Joe Paterno, fired in the fallout from the school's child sex abuse scandal, was hospitalized on Friday for observation due to complications from lung cancer treatments, his family said in a statement.

Paterno, 85, has been undergoing a regimen of treatments since November for a treatable form of lung cancer, the statement said. He also fell in December and injured his pelvis, it added.

Paterno was sacked by Penn State in November for failing to tell police what he knew about child sex abuse allegations against former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. Also fired was university president Graham Spanier.

Sandusky faces 52 charges stemming from accusations by 10 men who say he molested them as juveniles over a 15-year period.

The 67-year-old Sandusky has maintained his innocence. No date has been set for his trial, and he is under house arrest.

Paterno was hospitalized on Friday after experiencing "minor complications" from his cancer treatments, the statement said.

"Although these issues have been challenging for Coach Paterno and his family, he has total confidence in his doctors and is determined to make a full recovery," the family said.

Paterno injured his arm and hip last August in an on-field collision with a player.

A member of the College Hall of Fame, Paterno was head coach of the Nittany Lions for 46 years. With 409 victories at Penn State, he won more games in big-time college football than any other coach in the sport's history.

Unrivaled for the longevity of his success, Paterno promoted the notion that football players could excel on the field and in the classroom. "Success with Honor" was the motto of his football program, which boasted high graduation rates among players.

He's already teased that Drake and Kanye West may make appearances on his next album, and on Thursday, Justin Bieber confirmed that another music industry heavyweight will be assisting him on Believe.

Letting his fans know on Twitter that he's "gonna make that," the Black Eyed Peas frontman hyped up the collaboration further when he added, "let's make a hit tomorrow!! #collab. 'I gotta feeling this song is ganne be bigger than huge' #willpower."

The news comes as Bieber is deep in the studio working on his highly anticipated 2012 release. The team-up should make for an interesting track for the teen star. With Bieber hoping to recapture some of that Justin Timberlake/Timbaland magic from Timberlake's Future Sex/Love Sounds, will could bring some of that frenetic pop energy to Bieber's own work.

Last year, will made headlines when he worked with Britney Spears on her Femme Fatale song, "Big Fat Bass."

Earlier this week, Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun, teased that what he's heard of Believe has been "ridiculous." Bieber will turn 18 in March, and his team is hoping to bridge the gap between the boy we met on "Baby" and the man he's growing up to be.

"The only conversation we've had about Justin's album that we're about to do is it's really important that it's the proper transition, because we've seen him [with] 'Baby,' now we're watching him grow up," Bieber's longtime vocal producer, Kuk Harrell, told MTV News in November. "And we can't just throw him into the adult game right away. It has to be the proper transition. There's a record in between."
