Pay Per Click for SMBs Efficient Advertising | Business 2 Community

Advertising is one of the big spends for the majority of companies, especially starts up SMBs. How else do you alert people to the fact that your product or service is available and ready to order? If people don?t know about you or your product, they certainly won?t be sending any of their hard-earned cash your way. But the way that companies go about advertising varies a great deal, as do the results.

With the onset of the internet came a whole new advertising model and a whole new arena for companies to get their products in front of the paying public. Pay per click has perhaps had the biggest impact on the web in terms of advertising and it?s not difficult to see why this particular formula has been so successful. Companies can effectively target their market by using pay per click on very specific sites that are attracting the kind of visitors that are most likely to be interested in their products and services. This means that the conversion rate is likely to be greater than in a blanket approach of television or magazine advertorials, and the outlay is a lot less. A good PPC agency can create targeted content that offers real value as well as subtle directional links to relevant sites and products. This means that visitors will not feel as though they are being fed direct advertising ? the content offers genuine interest value ? they will be making an active choice to click on a link to an outside site that they are genuinely interested in.

With many small businesses unable to afford to the gargantuan costs of print advertising, pay per click is the ideal way to allocate a small advertising budget to exactly the right areas. If you have used a digital marketing agency UK in the past, you?ll be aware of all the options open to small (or indeed large) businesses, in terms of online marketing but pay per click offers the opportunity to put a proverbial toe into the advertising waters without having to shell out thousands of pounds for the pleasure. The costs can be tracked on a daily basis, capped if necessary, and the return on your investment can be seen in real time. So, rather than wait for weeks or months to see if an advertising campaign has resulted in actual sales, with pay per click, businesses can analyse web traffic and track sales that are linked directly to the ?clicks? through to the site from outside sites.

With a PPC agency, many small businesses are discovering the multiple benefits of pay per click advertising. It?s quick and easy to set up, the costs are more directly proportional to conversion rates and sales than other forms of advertising and there is more real-time analysis, which allows you to tweak the settings and the change direction if and when you want to.

NJ woman hit with ball sues Little League player

(AP) ? A New Jersey woman who was struck in the face with a baseball at a Little League game is suing the young catcher who threw it.

Elizabeth Lloyd is seeking more than $150,000 in damages to cover medical costs stemming from the incident at a Manchester Little League game two years ago. She's also seeking an undefined amount for pain and suffering.

Lloyd was sitting at a picnic table near a fenced-in bullpen when she was hit with the ball.

Catcher Matthew Migliaccio was 11 years old at the time and was warming up a pitcher.

The lawsuit filed April 24 alleges Migliaccio's errant throw was intentional and reckless, "assaulted and battered" Lloyd and caused "severe, painful and permanent" injuries.

A second count alleges Migliaccio's actions were negligent and careless through "engaging in inappropriate physical and/or sporting activity" near Lloyd. She continues to suffer pain and anguish, incur medical expenses and has been unable to carry out her usual duties and activities, the lawsuit says.

And Lloyd's husband, in a third count, is suing for the loss of "services, society and consortium" of his wife. They've demanded a jury trial.

Anthony Pagano, a lawyer for the Migliaccios, said the lawsuit is frivolous and without merit.

"I just think that it's disgusting that you have people suing an 11-year-old kid for overthrowing his pitcher in the bullpen," Pagano said. "It's horrible this can actually happen and get this far. Ultimately, hopefully, justice will prevail."

The count alleging negligence and carelessness is covered by homeowner's insurance, Pagano said, but the other counts are not. Little League has denied any coverage.

Lloyd's lawyer was out of the office Friday and could not be reached for comment.

Steve Barr, a spokesman for Little League, declined to comment on the litigation. He said each local league is required to have accident insurance, but that only covers personnel.

"That includes coaches, players, even concession stand workers. But it does not cover spectators," Barr said.

Matthew's father, Bob Migliaccio, said they were concerned for Lloyd when it happened. Then his son started receiving threatening and nasty letters, he said, and he started getting angry.

"The whole thing has almost been surreal," Migliaccio said. "We keep thinking it's just going to go away, and then a week and a half ago a sheriff shows up at my door to serve my son the papers."

Migliaccio said if his son had been horsing around, he would feel differently. But Matthew was doing what his coaches told him to do, he said, and noted Little League players aren't always accurate in their throws.

"It's absurd to expect every 11-year-old to throw the ball on target," Migliaccio said. "Everyone knows you've got to watch out. You assume some risk when you go out to a field. That's just part of being at a game."

Migliaccio said he and his wife, Sue, would love to beat the charges in court, but it could cost them tens of thousands of dollars. They also don't want to put their son and other kids on the team through all the questions and depositions a trial would bring.

"It's to the point now where we just want it to be over," he said.

Matthew, described by his father as a "baseball junkie," still plays on three different teams. But Migliaccio and his wife have stepped down from coaching and managing the concession stand because of the suit.

Migliaccio said as angry as he is about the lawsuit, he's almost more angry with Little League. He said they've volunteered hundreds of hours over the years, and he believes Little League should assist in defending their son.

"Somebody else has to step in here and help us out," Migliaccio said. "I just feel people should know about this, and maybe Little League can figure out a way to protect these kids."

South African daffodils may be a future cure for depression

Friday, June 22, 2012

Scientists at the University of Copenhagen have previously documented that substances from the South African plant species Crinum and Cyrtanthus ? akin to snowdrops and daffodils ? have an effect on the mechanisms in the brain that are involved in depression. This research has now yielded further results, since a team based at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences has recently shown how several South African daffodils contain plant compounds whose characteristics enable them to negotiate the defensive blood-brain barrier that is a key challenge in all new drug development.

"Several of our plant compounds can probably be smuggled past the brain's effective barrier proteins. We examined various compounds for their influence on the transporter proteins in the brain. This study was made in a genetically-modified cell model of the blood-brain barrier that contains high levels of the transporter P-glycoprotein. Our results are promising, and several of the chemical compounds studied should therefore be tested further, as candidates for long-term drug development," says Associate Professor Birger Brodin.

"The biggest challenge in medical treatment of diseases of the brain is that the drug cannot pass through the blood-brain barrier. The blood vessels of the brain are impenetrable for most compounds, one reason being the very active transporter proteins. You could say that the proteins pump the drugs out of the cells just as quickly as they are pumped in. So it is of great interest to find compounds that manage to 'trick' this line of defence."

The results of the study have been published in the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology.

New cooperation between biologists and organic chemists

It will nonetheless be a long time before any possible new drug reaches our pharmacy shelves:

"This is the first stage of a lengthy process, so it will take some time before we can determine which of the plant compounds can be used in further drug development," says Birger Brodin.

Yet this does not curb his enthusiasm for the opportunities from the interdisciplinary cooperation with organic scientists from the Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology and the Natural History Museum of Denmark.

"In my research group, we have had a long-term focus on the body's barrier tissue ? and in recent years particularly the transport of drug compounds across the blood-brain barrier. More than 90 per cent of all potential drugs fail the test by not making it through the barrier, or being pumped out as soon as they do get in. Studies of natural therapies are a valuable source of inspiration, giving us knowledge that can also be used in other contexts," Birger Brodin emphasises.

Samsung Galaxy S III (T-Mobile)

Giant, bold mega-phones are the new smartphone trend, and the impressive Samsung Galaxy S III ($279.99 with contract) is T-Mobile's first offering. With its 4.8-inch HD screen and state-of-the-art sharing and media features, the Galaxy S III makes a great window onto T-Mobile's fast 4G Internet. Its overall performance and quality make the Galaxy S III our new Editors' Choice for touch-screen smartphones on T-Mobile.

Editors' Note: The Samsung Galaxy S III models on all four major carriers are extremely similar, so we're sharing a lot of material between our various reviews. That said, we're testing each device separately, so read the review for your carrier of choice.

Physical Design
All of the new Galaxy S III models look the same, except for the carrier logo on the back panel. Each is available in dark blue or white (AT&T also has a red option coming this summer), and they're some of the biggest phones we've ever handled. At 5.4 by 2.8 by 0.34 inches (HWD) and 4.7 ounces, the GS3 is larger than the HTC One S ($199, 4.5 stars), although it's still noticeably smaller and lighter than the Samsung Galaxy Note phone/tablet hybrid ($299, 3 stars). ?That said, this is not a phone for folks with small hands.

I'm not a fan of huge?phones. But I've given up on panning them because every time I suggest these handsets are too big, I get pummeled by comments from people who adore them. Huge phones are the thing. I accept it.

The GS3's all-plastic body feels a little less high-end than the anodized gray aluminum of the HTC One S, but the phone is solidly built, and light despite its size. The front of the phone is dominated by the 4.8-inch, 1280-by-720-pixel Super AMOLED HD screen. Yes, it's PenTile, which can sometimes look slightly pixelated. But, no, you probably won't notice. Below the screen, there's a physical Home button, as well as light-up Back and Multitasking buttons that start out invisible, so you have to memorize where they are or change a setting to keep them illuminated. The 8-megapixel camera is on the back panel, which, thanks to its reflective finish, doubles as a pocket mirror.?

The default Automatic Brightness setting makes the screen too dim. Kill it and pump up the brightness and it's fine, even outdoors.?

Unlike the competing HTC One S, the S III has a removable 2100mAh battery. Taking off the back cover also reveals the microSD card slot, which supports cards up to 64GB.

Call Quality and Internet
If you're interested in talking on your smartphone, buy the Galaxy S III. Its advanced call quality features make a real difference. Default call quality is good. Volume is on the high end of average, with no distortion from loud inputs, and the speakerphone is loud enough to use outdoors. The microphone does a good job of cancelling background noise. Bluetooth headsets work fine with Samsung's "S-Voice" voice dialing system, and the phone supports T-Mobile's seamless Wi-Fi calling system.

But as with so many things here, call quality gets richer if you burrow down into the GS3's settings screens. A Volume Boost button throws the phone into a super-loud, quasi-speakerphone mode for noisy areas, but that's just the start. There's also an option to set custom call EQ: The phone plays you a sequence of quiet high and low tones and you tell it which ones you can hear, and then it EQ's calls accordingly. This is pretty radical stuff. I prefer my calls sharp, with more high-end, for instance, and the GS3 offers that. This all makes the GS3 the best voice phone on T-Mobile.

For data, the GS3 hits T-Mobile's HSPA+ 42 network, which can sometimes match AT&T's and Verizon's LTE on download speeds. It hits global HSPA+ and Wi-Fi on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, and Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC are also on board. T-Mobile still blocks Google Wallet, but Samsung found its own uses for NFC, which I'll get to below.

Battery life is a major strength here. We got 10 hours, 47 minutes of talk time, which is impressive, and, since the battery is removable, you can also carry a spare for extra juice, something you can't do with the HTC One S.

Software and Performance
The Galaxy S III runs Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich" with a whole lot of exclusive Samsung extensions. Performance was excellent in my tests. The Qualcomm S4 chip running at 1.5GHz is the fastest one we've seen in smartphones so far, and it's able to take on any app challenge you throw at it, including games on the HD screen. Our benchmark tests proved this, although they were within the margin of error when compared with the One S. Both phones are very fast.

Exclusive new features include S-Beam, the ability to transfer files by tapping two phones together and using a combination of NFC and Wi-Fi Direct; S-Voice, Samsung's answer to Apple's Siri; and TecTiles, NFC-enabled accessory tags that can change the settings on your phone. You also get lots of sharing and tagging options in the camera, such as automatically tagging your friends' faces, and the ability for multiple GS3s within a few feet of each other to automatically share all of their photos.

Many of these features work well, but they're almost all buried. The interface is something of a scavenger hunt. Take Smart Stay, a neat new feature which detects your face and keeps the screen from going black while you're looking at it. I love it! But it's not on by default, and the only way to turn it on is by going to the Display area under Settings. S-Beam is similarly buried, under the Wireless menu.

Restaurant Review // The Burger Cellar and Wine Bar

Food Photos Jayne Peres
Venue Photos provided by The Burger Cellar

In uptown Toronto lies a tasty hidden gem, The Burger Cellar and Wine Bar. When entering, you will come to realize this is not just a ?burger joint?. The brick walls, comfortable seating, and wooden d?cor are the first in a line of elegant twists to the genre.? The beautiful wood-finished bar and bright red chairs draw your eyes to an extensive selection of alcohols and mixers, and a fully stocked tantalus that lines the bar. In the spacious dining room, lamps are strategically hung above, bleaching light tables and dousing chairs in shadow. Striving not only for the best burger, but also for customer satisfaction, The Burger Cellar has more to offer than just a simple burger.

Sitting with the menu, we looked over a wide selection until our charming server, Bradley Butler, came laughing by. Unsure of what we would like to drink he placed two glasses of water down on the table and jokingly proceeded ?I pour a mean water, how could you do that wrong?? To start, on his suggestion we ordered a Pink Flamingo: a pink vodka lemonade that was our server?s winning entry in an in-house competition for the best cocktail. That too he did not do wrong.

We began our feast with another one of Bradley?s suggestion, the duck poutine. Just moments before, one of the tables across from us had gone nuts over the dish and Bradley confided that the duck had just been made. We needed no more convincing. Placing it happily in front of us, we were glad Bradley suggested we share it; it was a generous portion even for two. Digging in, we came to the conclusion that the pulled duck was astonishing, the subtle gravy was enlightening, and every inimitable bite melted perfectly in your mouth. It was so intoxicating that I will never again eat duck-less poutine.

Before our main course arrived, we ordered Chocolate Cherry Brandy milkshakes. Each shake is made with milk and Kawartha Dairy, the semi-official dairy ice cream of cottage country.

Then came the moment we were waiting for; our burgers had arrived. And to get a taste of the variety, we ordered two. One was The Burger Cellar Burger (The BCB), an Ontario family farmed beef patty, topped with two-year-old Bothwell smoked cheddar, apple cider bacon, chipotle BBQ sauce, a beer-battered onion ring, and saut?ed mushrooms?which I had omitted in favour of a more adventurous option. The Burger Cellar allows customers to customize their burger so I added an egg on my BCB?which I might add was absolutely delectable. The BCB had the perfect amount of flavour, where not one thing overwhelmed the other, and every bite was packed with succulence.

The other burger was the Hog Town Burger with Kobe beef; a Japanese style beef patty topped with aged Block & Barrel white Ontario cheddar, and apple cider bacon. To add a bit of a sweetness we asked for Thai sauce on the side. Absolutely enjoyable we loved the cheese?s sharp contrast to the Kobe beef. The burger was so moist you could have eaten it without condiments.

But, the burgers are not the only thing drawing in the crowds at The Burger Cellar? grilled four-cheese sandwiches, steak frites, salmon BLT sandwiches, sweet-chili chicken, cellar Cobb salad?just thinking about the menu is almost enough. For instance, once a week, every week, one gentleman comes in with his family and always orders the Steak Frites, a 10oz Ontario strip loin.

To finish our meals we decided on the Apple Crisp, a personal-sized baked apple pie stuffed with apples, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, and caramel sauce topped with vanilla ice cream. For apple pie lovers, this warm, fresh-out-of-the-oven plate is the perfect sweet to end a savoury meal.

The upscale restaurant is owned by Alan Voves, and will be celebrating its second year on October 10th. A dedicated supporter of the North York General Hospital kids and teen program, The Burger Cellar continue to works with the community and loves getting involved in the neighborhood. Located at 3391 Yonge Street, The Burger Cellar is open Sunday to Wednesday 11:30 am ? 10:00 pm, Thursday 11:30 am ? 11:00 pm and Friday and Saturday 11:30 am ? Midnight. The establishment also offers venue bookings for events with up to 150 people such as bar mitzvahs, weddings, cocktail receptions, and more. Reservations are not required.

Poll: Vast Support for New Health Care Effort | Health and Fitness

Americans overwhelmingly want the president and Congress to get to work on a new bill to change the health care system if the Supreme Court strikes down President Barack Obama?s 2010 overhaul as unconstitutional, a new poll finds.

A new health care bill doesn?t seem to be in either party?s plans on the verge of the high court?s verdict on the law aimed at extending health insurance to more than 30 million Americans who now lack coverage. Republicans say they will try to repeal whatever?s left of the law after the high court rules and then wait at least until after the November elections to push replacement measures. Democrats say Obama will push to put in place whatever survives.

But an Associated Press-GfK poll shows that more than three-fourths of Americans do not want their political leaders to leave the health care system alone in the event the court throws out the health care law.

Large majorities of both opponents and backers of the law share the view that Congress and the president should undertake a new effort. The lowest level of support for new health care legislation comes from people who identify themselves as strong supporters of the tea party. Even in that group, though, nearly 60 percent favor work on a new bill.

Gary Hess, a Republican from Discovery Bay, Calif., wants the high court to throw out the entire law.

But Hess, 77, said he favors the provision requiring insurance companies to cover people regardless of their medical condition. ?There needs to be compromise on both sides,? the retired school administrator said.

Garrett Chase, 51, said he hopes the court leaves the law in place but agreed with Hess that the politicians should get back to work if this law is struck down. ?I live in the ghetto, and I see people dying every day,? said Chase, an unemployed car salesman from Baltimore. ?They can?t get help because they can?t afford it.?

The call for new legislation comes even as just a third of Americans support the landmark health care law. The overall level of support for the law is relatively unchanged in recent months, with 47 percent opposing it. But among independents, only 21 percent approve of the law, a new low in AP-GfK polling.

Most of the law?s major changes have yet to take effect, including the requirement that most people have health insurance or pay a penalty. The insurance mandate has been among the least popular aspects of the law. Provisions that have gone into effect include extended coverage for young adults on their parents? insurance and relief for seniors with high prescription drug costs.

A narrow majority say the outcome of this year?s presidential contest between Obama and his presumed challenger, Republican Mitt Romney, will have a big effect on the nation?s health care system. Republicans, at 58 percent, are most likely to see a link between the election and health care. Forty-eight percent of Democrats and 42 percent of independents believe the election will have a great deal of impact on the health care system.

Obama?s approval rating on handling health care was unchanged compared with polls in May and February. Forty-eight percent approve and 50 percent disapprove of his handling of the issue. Independents? disapproval of Obama on health care topped 50 percent for the first time since October.

The Associated Press-GfK Poll was conducted June 14-18 by GfK Roper Public Affairs and Corporate Communications. It involved landline and cellphone interviews with 1,007 adults nationwide and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Three reasons Mitt Romney will win Michigan, and three reasons he won't

Family ties and changing state demographics could help in Michigan, but Mitt Romney has a long way to go to overcome President Obama's lead in the polls ? and his own opposition to the auto bailout.

Might Mitt Romney win Michigan in November? That question arises because the presumptive Republican presidential nominee is touring Michigan Tuesday and Wednesday at the end of his six-state ?Every Town Counts? bus tour. Mr. Romney was born in the Wolverine State, of course, and his father was a popular Michigan governor. He predicts he?ll take the state despite the fact that it has gone Democratic for five presidential elections in a row.

?I?m going to win Michigan with your help!? Romney on Tuesday told a rally in the quaint vacation town of Frankenmuth.

Why the optimism? Well, at this stage in the race all candidates are optimistic about everything ? they have to be. But here are three reasons Michigan might be an attainable goal for the Romney campaign.

FAMILY TIES. Michiganders of a certain age remember the state?s George Romney era fondly. A backslapping, genial ex-auto exec, Romney p?re presided over Michigan?s 1960s-era boom. His status as a moderate Rockefeller Republican could help counterbalance Romney the son?s drift to the right.

REAGAN DEMOCRATS. In the 1980s, Michigan autoworkers defined the term ?Reagan Democrat.? The state voted for Reagan twice and for George H.W. Bush once. White working-class voters are a particular problem area for President Obama, and they were a ?dominant element? in the state?s electoral equation in 2008, according to a Brookings Institution analysis of Michigan demographics.

DETROIT?S DECLINE. Big urban areas in general are Democratic strongholds, and Detroit is no exception. There?s a reason Democratic candidates often kick off their fall campaigns with a Labor Day rally in the union-centric Motor City. But Detroit isn?t what it used to be, Clint Eastwood Chrysler Super Bowl ads notwithstanding. The city?s population has fallen by 25 percent over the past 10 years, and its Democratic political machine is crumbling.

Still, winning Michigan would be a stretch for a Republican who himself was governor of Massachusetts and maintains homes in New Hampshire and California. Here are three reasons Romney might better concentrate on Florida or other swing states more within his reach.

WHAT FAMILY TIES? Nobody in the state under age 50 remembers George Romney anymore ? that was a long time ago. The young Mitt went to Cranbrook, a private school as exclusive as any in the country. The auto industry's lovely car ads are filmed there. They aren?t doing that at public high schools in, say, Flint.

TWO WORDS: ?AUTO BAILOUT.??Romney famously opposed Mr. Obama?s auto bailout, although he now argues that bailout followed a pattern he suggested. Whatever the details, this is an issue the Obama campaign will try to exploit throughout Michigan and the industrial upper Midwest. GM is alive, and it?s hard to exaggerate how much that means to Michiganders, even in the nonmean streets of Romney?s hometown of Grosse Pointe.

THE POLLS DON?T LOOK GOOD. The latest RealClearPolitics rolling average of major polls puts Romney 5.4 percentage points behind Obama, 42.6 percent to 48 percent. The most recent individual survey wrapped into those numbers, a mid-June poll from Rasmussen Reports, had Romney down by a whopping 8 points. That?s not a fatal deficit, but it?s a fairly deep hole from which Romney will have to extricate himself to win the state.

Briggs named Hammerheads assistant coach

The Hammerheads announced Tuesday afternoon that midfielder Mark Briggs will officially pick up the additional title of assistant coach.

?It?s a great first step onto the coaching ladder for me,? said Briggs in a press release. ?It?s a very proud moment for me personally to be announced Player/Assistant Coach to a squad and organization I?m very honored to be a part of.?

Also from the release:

?? ??

Looking back to when Mark Briggs, also known as ?Briggsy? by his friends and teammates, signed with the Wilmington Hammerheads in 2009, he was voted team MVP while leading the squad to the 2009 USL regular season title which resulted in one the most successful seasons for the Hammerheads franchise.

?Mark has a wealth of experience,? affirms Hammerheads Head Coach David Irving. ?He loves the game and it?s that time in his career if he wants to stay in the game to expand and take on a coaching position. I?m glad he is here to help me and his teammates.?

Prior to returning to the Hammerheads in 2012, Briggs signed for Mosta of the Maltese First Division and was later announced to be on loan to the Charleston Battery for the remainder of the season. Briggs is well traveled and highly experienced in the industry. Since the beginning of his professional career, the Englishman has not only played with leagues in the United States and Malta, but in Denmark and England as well.

Android apps that use power control APIs are often 'battery killers,' oh the irony

Android apps that use power control APIs are often 'battery killers,' oh the ironyIf there's one thing Purdue University researchers can't stand, it's an inefficient Android app. They've already revealed how some titles burn huge amounts of energy just by running ads (e.g., Angry Birds uses 63 percent of its resources for flogging stuff rather than flinging stuff), and now they've confirmed something else that has long been suspected: many offerings on Google Play also contain serious "energy bugs." Specifically, these are apps that use Android's power control or wakelock APIs to prevent a phone going into sleep mode. The majority of developers use wakelocks properly, but around a quarter make mistakes in how they juggle different APIs, which can cause a fully-charged phone to drain "in as little as five hours." Out of 187 wakelock-exploiting apps tested, 42 contained errors -- although the academics stopped short of naming and shaming. There's a chance they'll list the culprits when they present their paper next week, which will also propose an automatic method for detecting the glitches. Will that be another app?

Military guards Egypt power as Islamists claim victory

Egyptian election workers count votes at a polling station on June 17, in Cairo.

By msnbc.com news services and staff

Updated at 11:09 p.m. ET: As Egyptians waited for the results of the presidential election, the ruling military council issued new rules that made clear the real power remains with the army.

The Muslim Brotherhood's party on Monday declared its candidate, Mohammed Morsi, had won the country's first free presidential election, defeating Ahmed Shafik, ousted president Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister.

At Shafik's campaign headquarters, Ahmed Sarhan said: "I do not accept this, I will not file wrong numbers." But another campaigner said: "I don't think we will make it." One woman campaigner at Shafik's headquarters was in tears.

Hours earlier, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) issued a decree granting itself broad power over the future government, diminishing? the authority of the president and seizing control of the process of writing a permanent constitution, The New York Times reported.

The move is the latest in a series of steps that the military has taken recently to hold on power they had promised to hand over to elected civilians, the Times reported.

The military council's "constitutional declaration," issued under powers it took for itself after pushing aside Mubarak to appease street protests 16 months ago, was a blow to democracy, said many who aired their grievances on social media, a favored weapon in the Arab Spring that ended Mubarak's 30-year rule.

'Outright military coup'
"Grave setback for democracy and revolution," tweeted former U.N. diplomat and Nobel peace laureate Mohamed ElBaradei.

"SCAF retains legislative power, strips president of any authority over army and solidifies its control," he said.

"The 'unconstitutional declaration' continues an outright military coup," tweeted Abdel Moneim Abol Fotouh, a moderate Islamist knocked out in the first round of the presidential election last month. "We have a duty to confront it."

A Facebook page whose young activists helped launch the uprising mocked the army's order, noting Egypt would have a head of state with no control over his own armed forces: "It means the president is elected but has no power," one comment read.

Turnout, which was only 46 percent in the first round of the presidential vote, appeared to electoral officials to have been no higher for the decisive head-to-head contest. Many of the 50 million eligible voters were dismayed by an unpalatable choice between a man seen as an heir to Mubarak and the nominee of a religious party committed to reversing liberal social traditions. Some cast a ballot against both men in protest.

In a victory speech at his campaign headquarters, Morsi clearly sought to assuage the fears of the large sector of Egyptians that the Brotherhood will try to impose stricter provisions of Islamic law.

"Thank God, who guided the people of Egypt to this right path, the path of freedom and democracy," the bearded, 60-year-old U.S.-educated engineer declared. He promised to "to Egypt in all its factions, Muslims and Christians" to "be a president for all Egyptians ... a servant to them" and seek a "civil, democratic, constitutional and modern state." He mentioned churches and Christians several times and hardly mentioned Islam or Muslims.

The order from Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, the chairman to the Supreme Council, indicated that the army, which also controls swathes of Egypt's economy, has no intention of handing substantial power now to its old adversary the Brotherhood.

"SCAF will carry legislative responsibilities ... until a new parliament is elected," the council's order said.

It raised a question of how, even if a civilian head of state is sworn in this week, Tantawi can claim to have met his own deadline of July 1 for relinquishing control - a deadline the armed forces' major patron and paymaster the United States had stressed in recent days it was expecting him to respect.

Washington and Egypt's European allies, also major providers of aid to the most populous Arab state, had voiced concern when Tantawi, backed by a judicial ruling from a court appointed under Mubarak, dissolved the parliament elected in January in which the Brotherhood and hardline Islamists had a big majority.

'Dangerous days'
The Brotherhood has rejected the army's power to dissolve parliament and warned of "dangerous days". But though some have compared events to those in Algeria 20 years which ended in civil war between the military and Islamists, many doubt that the Brotherhood has an appetite for violence at present.

Many opponents of military rule have also complained that the Brotherhood has overreached itself in seeking both legislative and presidential power, limiting its broader appeal.

Egyptians massed in their millions against Mubarak in January last year in the hope that his removal would end poverty, corruption and police brutality. Many now seem tired of the social turmoil and political bickering that ensued.

Egypt's armed forces have built up massive wealth and commercial interests, helped since the 1970s by a close U.S. alliance which followed the decision of the most populous Arab state to make peace with Israel.

Many Egyptians say the army is just one wing of an entrenched security establishment that has resisted reform and oversight since Mubarak left and would wield influence long after the promised handover to an elected civilian.

"There is no doubt that the state in all its institutions - judicial, military, interior, foreign and financial - back Shafiq for president and are working to that end," said Hassan Nafaa, a politics professor who campaigned against Mubarak.

"It is very difficult to eradicate this spirit of Mubarak."

Blasts hit northern Nigeria churches

By msnbc.com news services

A least two explosions shook the town of Zaria in northern Nigeria's Kaduna state on Sunday, the emergency services said, and at least one of them was at a church, a security official said.?

Reuters reported two explosions, while The Associated Press quoted a Nigerian official as saying that a third explosion had rocked the area. There was no explanation for the different accounts but such discrepancies are common in the immediate aftermath of such events.

Islamist sect Boko Haram has often attacked church services in Nigeria, split roughly evenly between Christians and Muslims.?

Witness: Attack on Christians in Nigeria kills at least 15

Boko Haram, which has become increasingly radicalised and meshed with other Islamist groups in the region, including al-Qaida's north African wing, is the leading security threat to Nigeria, Africa's top oil producer and a member of OPEC.?

Regular attacks on Sunday church services are usually claimed by the sect, which says it is fighting to reinstate an ancient Islamic caliphate that would adhere to strict sharia (Islamic law).?

US warns of attacks on Westerners in Nigeria

Islamist militants attacked two churches in Nigeria last Sunday, spraying the congregation of one with bullets, killing at least one person, and blowing up a car in a suicide bombing at the other, wounding 41.?

The Islamists' leader, Abubakar Shekau, has justified attacks on Christians as revenge for killings of Muslims in Nigeria's volatile "Middle Belt", where the largely Christian south and mostly Muslim north meet.?

Creating a Workers' Compensation Process - Insurance Connecticut

Last updated 19 hours ago

By developing a cohesive workers? compensation process, you can play an active role in reducing related costs.??

For the unprepared, workers? compensation (WC) issues can be both confusing and costly. Fortunately for employers, there are ways to actively engage WC issues to influence their outcomes.

Through management controls and active involvement in the WC process, your organization can effectively influence related costs. To do so you will have to establish a number of your own processes that guide decision making throughout your organization.

Areas requiring WC management can be divided into three main categories. These categories include facets that may range from the simple to the complex but, as a whole, address vital issues that can negatively influence WC costs in your company.

Workplace Safety Means Fewer Claims

Simply put, reducing?claims reduces costs. Establishing a safety-minded culture throughout every level of your company is essential to keeping workers injury free. However, establishing such a culture isn?t an overnight solution. To be successful, an ongoing commitment to safety must be made. Such a commitment must be supported by management and given the necessary resources to succeed.

Developing comprehensive safety policies for employees builds a firm foundation for your safety culture to grow. Such policies also encourage OSHA compliance, further improving your safety efforts while helping you avoid costly fines.

Mitigate Loss After an Injury

Unfortunately, even with all the right programs in place, it is still possible for accidents to happen. When a workplace incident occurs how you respond can greatly influence the outcome of the claim. Prompt claim reporting is essential to keeping costs down. It is also important to have a designated injury management coordinator, someone who can supervise open claims and work with both employees and medical personnel to facilitate the timely recovery.?

The longer an employee is out of work the more expensive their claim will be. Return to Work programs that allow injured employees to come back to work at a limited capacity during the recovery process, are one of the most effective tools business owners have to reduce the severity of a claim.

Managing Your Mod

Insurers use what is known as an experience modification factor, or mod, to calculate the premiums you pay for workers? compensation coverage. By managing your exposures and promoting safety it is possible to manage your mod and decrease your premium rates.

Like a good safety program, controlling your mod is an ongoing process. To reap the benefits of lower premiums you will have to keep in regular contact with your insurance provider to ensure they have the most accurate data to use in their calculations.
