The largest event of its kind for the region, hundreds of families, educators, and exhibitors packed Young Sports in Wayne for an afternoon of informative seminars, fun, and prizes at the Main Line Early Childhood Education Fair.

Forty-five exhibitors were on hand to share in the event, which was sponsored by Kimberton Waldorf School. Exhibitors included Agnes Irwin School, Brain Balance Centers of Wayne, Friends School Haverford, Southeast Regional Key, and Woodlynde School.? (Check out the full list of exhibitors.)

When searching for an educational facility for your child, preparation is important. While many were looking for options to attend this fall, some wanted to start their search early. Alex, a 7-month-old from Ardmore, already attends daycare but his parents wanted to look around to see the next step could be.

From part-time preschools to full-time Montessori or day care with a partial academic preschool built in, there were many schooling options on hand. Parents could learn about the various educational philosophies, different schedules, and possible extras they may never have thought about. A Spanish language immersion program such as one offered by fair exhibitor Spanish Workshop for Children assists children in becoming competent in a second language, giving them an advantage to succeed.

In addition to visiting an array of educational facilities the fair provided fun and informative sessions. ?Sessions included mind, body, and wellness tips, financial advice, and a preschool primer. ?As if information sessions weren?t enough, the young ones were treated to science and puppet shows!

Parents needing a brief break from the flurry of activity at the fair found useful health and wellness advice from Kelly Ann Zazyczny, a pediatric nurse from Bryn Mawr Hospital.?Zazyczny believes the key to life is to self preserve. ?Methods suggested include stress reduction through exercise, eating healthy, finding quiet time to be by yourself, and investing in quality personal relationships. Zazyczny believes that children can also benefit from quiet time built into their schedules.

Parents looking for some family financial planning advice attended the seminar from New York Life. Tips included:

• Planning now for your child?s education.
• Borrowing now thanks to historically low interest rates.
• Purchasing life insurance. Surprising fact: only 1 in 5 people have it.

Armed with wellness and financial advice, parents then visited with Shannon Choe of Premier Baby Concierge, who wrapped up the afternoon with a preschool 101 seminar.? Choe encouraged families to begin the childcare search early and to think about the type of program they might like: all day vs. half day, active parental involvement vs. no parental involvement. Location and logistics are also important factors to take into consideration. Is it easy to get to the school? Can you pick up one child and still have time to get to another school to pick up an additional child? Can more than one child attend the same facility?

Families attending the day?s activities left with prizes (like a great canvas tote thanks to Kimberton Walforf!) and a host of important information. Now comes the hard part ? sending them off on that first day without breaking out the tissues.

Main Line Parent was proud to feature local charity Joy of Sox with a Sock Drive at the event. 1460 pairs of socks collected from families with young children, who made donations at exhibitor tables to enter their gift basket raffles. Heart of a distant quasar observed with unprecedented sharpness: Sharpness two million times finer than human vision

ScienceDaily (July 18, 2012) ? An international team of astronomers has observed the heart of a distant quasar with unprecedented sharpness, two million times finer than human vision. The observations, made by connecting the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) telescope [1] to two others on different continents for the first time, is a crucial step towards the dramatic scientific goal of the "Event Horizon Telescope" project [2]: imaging the supermassive black holes at the centre of our own galaxy and others.

Astronomers connected APEX, in Chile, to the Submillimeter Array (SMA) [3] in Hawaii, USA, and the Submillimeter Telescope (SMT) [4] in Arizona, USA. They were able to make the sharpest direct observation ever [5], of the centre of a distant galaxy, the bright quasar 3C 279, which contains a supermassive black hole with a mass about one billion times that of the Sun, and is so far from Earth that its light has taken more than 5 billion years to reach us. APEX is a collaboration between the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy (MPIfR), the Onsala Space Observatory (OSO) and ESO. APEX is operated by ESO.

The telescopes were linked using a technique known as Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI). Larger telescopes can make sharper observations, and interferometry allows multiple telescopes to act like a single telescope as large as the separation -- or "baseline" -- between them. Using VLBI, the sharpest observations can be achieved by making the separation between telescopes as large as possible. For their quasar observations, the team used the three telescopes to create an interferometer with transcontinental baseline lengths of 9447 km from Chile to Hawaii, 7174 km from Chile to Arizona and 4627 km from Arizona to Hawaii. Connecting APEX in Chile to the network was crucial, as it contributed the longest baselines.

The observations were made in radio waves with a wavelength of 1.3 millimetres. This is the first time observations at a wavelength as short as this have been made using such long baselines. The observations achieved a sharpness, or angular resolution, of just 28 microarcseconds -- about 8 billionths of a degree. This represents the ability to distinguish details an amazing two million times sharper than human vision. Observations this sharp can probe scales of less than a light-year across the quasar -- a remarkable achievement for a target that is billions of light-years away.

The observations represent a new milestone towards imaging supermassive black holes and the regions around them. In future it is planned to connect even more telescopes in this way to create the so-called Event Horizon Telescope. The Event Horizon Telescope will be able to image the shadow of the supermassive black hole in the centre of our Milky Way galaxy, as well as others in nearby galaxies. The shadow -- a dark region seen against a brighter background -- is caused by the bending of light by the black hole, and would be the first direct observational evidence for the existence of a black hole's event horizon, the boundary from within which not even light can escape.

The experiment marks the first time that APEX has taken part in VLBI observations, and is the culmination of three years hard work at APEX's high altitude site on the 5000-metre plateau of Chajnantor in the Chilean Andes, where the atmospheric pressure is only about half that at sea level. To make APEX ready for VLBI, scientists from Germany and Sweden installed new digital data acquisition systems, a very precise atomic clock, and pressurised data recorders capable of recording 4 gigabits per second for many hours under challenging environmental conditions [6]. The data -- 4 terabytes from each telescope -- were shipped to Germany on hard drives and processed at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn.

The successful addition of APEX is also important for another reason. It shares its location and many aspects of its technology with the new Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) telescope [7]. ALMA is currently under construction and will finally consist of 54 dishes with the same 12-metre diameter as APEX, plus 12 smaller dishes with a diameter of 7 metres. The possibility of connecting ALMA to the network is currently being studied. With the vastly increased collecting area of ALMA's dishes, the observations could achieve 10 times better sensitivity than these initial tests. This would put the shadow of the Milky Way's supermassive black hole within reach for future observations.

[5] Some indirect techniques have been used to probe finer scales, for example using microlensing (see heic1116) or interstellar scintillation, but this is a record for direct observations.

[6] These systems were developed in parallel in the USA (MIT-Haystack observatory) and in Europe (MPIfR, INAF -- Istituto di Radioastronomia Noto VLBI Station, and HAT-Lab). A hydrogen maser time standard (T4Science) was installed as the very precise atomic clock. The SMT and SMA had already been equipped similarly for VLBI.

[7] The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), an international astronomy facility, is a partnership of Europe, North America and East Asia in cooperation with the Republic of Chile. ESO is the European partner in ALMA.

Ahoy ladies and gentlemen! Here?s another book review by simply one of our interns, Ben L, who is an incredibly avid reader and e-book junkie of all things self-improvement linked.

This time, we talk about ?The Secret? by Rhonda Byrne with a specific emphasis on how ?The Secret? relates to dating and like a pick up artist (PUA) over the Law of Attraction.

?The Secret? by Rhonda Byrne: A PUA Book Review

?The Secret? by Rhonda Byrne should significantly be required reading for everyone. NO JOKE.

I was initial introduced to this book back in 2008, once i was going through several tough times. My grandaddy had just perished, the Thai eating place my parents own just closed once and for all, and school has been kicking my rear end. I gained pounds, started drinking intensely, and fell at the rear of in practicing our instrument (percussion).

My mother saw myself going through these difficult times and gave me this specific little book referred to as ?The Secret,? by Rhonda Byrne.

I remember opening The Secret as well as reading each small word. This small morsel is but a few 100 short pages, but on tiny little bite sized pages, so those much less bookworm avid such as myself personally can enjoy the Secret. The novel talks about one of the main facets of being a PUA believe it or not. This can be the most important life training of all ? POSITIVITY.

Rhonda Byrne talks about negativity in the world. There exists a TON of negative crap here in the world, much like the news, newspapers, individuals around you (JT?s barrel of crabs syndrome anyone?), tension from the boss, ect. Inside the Secret, Rhonda Byrne suggests this negative power is extremely weak. Thinking badly will only drop the climate and just create a snowballing effect of poor mojo.

For example, ?Oh gosh, I have this test I?ve got to study for, basically fail, my rank goes down, GPA fails, can?t get into graduate college, gonna work at starbucks?? A common college student dilemma offers snowballed into a horrid bleak future. Is this train of thought healthful? Take a look at the Law of Attraction

Positivity creates much more positivity. Negativity creates much more negativity.

The Law regarding Attraction will always entice whatever someone thinks about. In layman?s conditions, think good to acquire good, think negative to get bad, feel shit to get crap. After reading ?The Secret,? I started to change my thought process, started smiling much more, began enjoying life. Now this book didn?t assist me to lose any pounds (I let Several hour body do this!), but it really helped me enjoy life for what it is, along with let all the negative thoughts and stress associated with life seemingly burn off with positive ideas and energy.

Rhonda Byrne suggests pulling what positivity there is in situations. She talks about just plainly ENJOYING life. Ever take a seat at a meal and attempt to enjoy EVERY Nip? Sit down for a subsequent, and remember EVERY SINGLE Chunk and how DELICIOUS that will pasta is, what sort of flavors of pasta with zesty tomato marinara sauce blends with the sweet aroma of fresh cut chives. Every meal has been unbelievably enjoyable, and in most honesty, the joy inside eating has come back again.

Now as PUAs, we need to understand this lesson within the Law of Attraction and good thinking wholeheartedly. The self improvement portion of this book is mainly regarding changing how you see life and to create a paradigm shift for yourself.

Would you just want to complain concerning everything around you?

Legislation of attraction will require that negative power and slap an individual right back with it. Heading out to the club using a negative attitude of, ?this club?s music sucks, the ladies are ugly, there?s nothing better than a 7 here, ect?? will merely cause nasty repercussions in the field.

Going into the club thinking, ?I?m going to have a lot fun talking to all these beautiful girls inside them for hours drinks with my personal best friends, it?s going to be excellent!? will cause quite a modify of state inside the venue. As us all solo sargers know, state of mind is absolutely important. Comprehending the Secret and the Law of Attraction will only help the circumstance.

The most important lesson The trick can teach a PUA is thinking positivity.

In our ABC?s Structure, I find The Secret and The Loa primarily involved in the Any and C Stage. In the A-Phase, we need to Presume ATTRACTION before many of us even Approach your ex!

This comes in conjunction with the Law of Attraction. Nearing a set with that drop dead gorgeous brunette feels a ton better when you give yourself good reinforcement and go ahead guns blazing.

In the C-Phase (Compliance, Comfort & Connect), having a positive manner in building comfort with a beautiful woman will just enhance the attractive factor. Talking negative in comfort will just ward the girl absent. No girl wants to hear about your feline dying or the way your 9-5 job sucks.

Even though book is incredibly positive and super beneficial, it has quite a bit of ?filthy hippie talk.?

This hippie talk is quite incredible. For example, for training and losing weight, you need to putt a piece of paper on your scale and writing down your ideal weight. I don?t think this is a good strategy, but ?The Secret? suggests that. The Secret also endorses printing out a fake examine from their website and producing in how much money you would like and just let the check out sit somewhere in which you will see it every single day and one day this money will ?magically synthesize? as if santa just popped out of the chimney with a tote full of money.

Fairly darned farfetched?

If you?re gonna read this book, don?t research the tiny little intricacies it suggests. You need to the big picture into mind. ?The Secret is the Law involving Attraction. You are a magnetic and your positive ideas will attract optimistic attention to your life.?

Just like any self-improvement book, determine what strikes you since many compelling, interesting, and curious, then try out it, document your current results, and use the things that work. For me, what proved helpful is the positive thinking, being optimistic, and always looking on the advantages of life.

Any time things go bad, or perhaps shit goes down, I recently remember The Law of Attraction, and just how I need to think optimistic to bring more great in my life.

I highly recommend you read ?The Secret.? It is a wonderful book and it has solved the problem in so many ways to organize my considering.

HOUSTON (AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden rallied support for President Barack Obama before the nation's largest civil rights organization on Thursday, declaring that Republican challenger Mitt Romney's election-year agenda would hurt ? not help ? working families in the black community.

Biden, appearing before the NAACP's annual convention one day after Romney addressed the group, offered what amounted to a rebuttal of the Republican rival as both campaigns sought support from a key constituency in several swing states.

The vice president did not specifically cite Romney's argument to the NAACP on Wednesday that he could serve African-Americans better than Obama, the nation's first black president. Romney was booed when he said he'd repeal Obama's sweeping health care reform law but otherwise got a polite reception as he reached out to a traditionally Democratic voting bloc.

Biden predictably drew a far more rousing reception as he outlined differences between Obama and Romney on health care, education, energy, women's rights and research, saying the two rivals had "fundamentally different visions."

Biden offered a rundown of Obama's first term, pointing to a landmark health care law, launching the mission that killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden and the decision to rescue the financial system and U.S. automakers General Motors and Chrysler.

"I believe this election will come down to character, conviction and vision. And it will not surprise you ? I don't think it's even a close call," Biden said. "So it's time, it's time for the NAACP to do what it's always done ... To stand up. Make our case. Stand our ground. And make real our vision for America."

Obama did not speak to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People this year, appearing instead in a taped video message. In the brief remarks, Obama said: "I stand on your shoulders and at the NAACP you have always believed in the American promise." He reiterated many of the themes of his re-election campaign, saying the nation needs to "build an economy where everyone can have the confidence that the hard work will also pay off."

The president said he was sorry he couldn't be there in person. Obama had no public events scheduled Thursday but was to be interviewed at the White House, along with first lady Michelle Obama, by Charlie Rose of CBS News.

White House officials noted that Obama spoke to the NAACP convention during the 2008 presidential campaign and in 2009, while Mrs. Obama addressed the group in 2010. The president is scheduled to address the National Urban League in New Orleans on July 25.

Black voters are a key part of Obama's re-election strategy, with about 95 percent supporting him in 2008. Polls have shown black voters supporting Obama at comparable levels this year but Romney could undercut the president in states with large black communities, such as North Carolina, Virginia, Ohio and Florida, if he can persuade some black voters to support him or if they stay home on Election Day.

Romney said Wednesday that much more must be done to improve education in the nation's cities and noted that the 14.4 percent unemployment rate among blacks is higher than the 8.2 percent national average.

"If you understood who I truly am in my heart, and if it were possible to fully communicate what I believe is in the real, enduring best interest of African-American families, you would vote for me for president," Romney said.

In Obama's absence, Biden offered a fiery defense of administration policies while warning of what a Romney presidency would bring to civil rights. He asked attendees to "imagine" what the Justice Department would be like under a Romney administration and "imagine when his senior adviser on the Constitution is Robert Bork," the Republican Supreme Court nominee who was defeated by Democrats in 1987. Biden was chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee at the time.

Biden received sustained applause throughout his address. When he spoke about civil rights and administration efforts to expand voting rights and not diminish them, the crowd stood and loudly cheered. When Biden said, "Did you think we'd be fighting these battles again?" people in the crowd answered in unison, "No."

Biden said there was a lot more he could say on protecting voting rights but that he was "preaching to the choir." ''Say it, say it," many in the crowded responded. As Biden was wrapping up, he said, "Let me close, my friends," prompting members of the audience to boo and yell, "No!"

3 Armstrong associates get lifetime USADA bans

With Lance Armstrong still digging in for a legal fight, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency on Tuesday issued lifetime sports bans to three former staff members and consultants on Armstrong's winning Tour de France teams for doping violations.

Luis Garcia del Moral was a team doctor; Michele Ferrari was a consulting doctor; and Jose "Pepe" Marti (team trainer) worked for Armstrong's U.S. Postal Service and Discovery Channel squads. All had been accused by USADA of participating in a vast doping conspiracy on those teams during part or all of Armstrong's seven Tour de France victories from 1999-2005.

Armstrong also has been charged and has declared his innocence. Armstrong wants a federal judge to block USADA's case against him from going forward and is expected to refile a lawsuit within days. An Armstrong spokesman declined immediate comment on the USADA bans issued Tuesday.

Under USADA rules, Moral, Marti and Ferrari had until Monday to challenge the allegations in arbitration or ask for a five-day extension. If they did not respond, USADA could impose sanctions.

Although none lives in the United States, USADA says the ban blocks them from participating in any sport that falls under the World Anti-Doping Agency code.

"The respondents chose not to waste resources by moving forward with the arbitration process, which would only reveal what they already know to be the truth of their doping activity," said Travis Tygart, chief executive of USADA.

There's been no indication from USADA that any of the three men ? who each received the agency's maximum punishment ? is cooperating with investigators.

Armstrong was granted his extension while he files his court case. Also charged and granted an extension was Armstrong's former team manager Johan Bruyneel.

Another team doctor, Pedro Celaya, also has been charged and faced the same Monday deadline. A USADA spokeswoman declined to say if Celaya asked for an extension or for his case to go to arbitration.

USADA filed the charges against Armstrong and the others in June, laying out what it calls a vast doping conspiracy on Armstrong's teams when he was winning the Tour de France from 1999-2005.

Moral, who lives in Spain, was the team physician from 1999-2003. According to USADA, he helped riders use banned blood transfusion techniques to help boost endurance. He also helped them use banned performance-enhancing drugs including the blood-booster EPO and steroids.

Moral could not immediately be reached for comment by telephone or email.

Ferrari, who lives in Italy, was a consulting doctor for Armstrong and the U.S. Postal Service and Discovery Channel teams from 1999-2006, according to USADA. USADA said Ferrari developed a special mixture of testosterone and olive oil to be placed under the tongue to help riders recover from races and training. He also helped advised riders how to use EPO and avoid detection.

Ferrari's lawyer could not be immediately reached for comment and there was no answer at Ferrari's home. The doctor already was banned for life by the Italian cycling federation in 2002.

Marti, of Spain, who worked for the U.S. Postal Service, Discovery from 1999-2007 and then Astana, helped deliver performance-enhancing drugs to riders in Europe and helped with injections, USADA said.

"Permanently banning these individuals from sport is a powerful statement that protects the current and next generation of athletes from their influence, and preserves the integrity of future competition," Tygart said.

For his third act, Chris Hughes, prince of the new media, has set his sights on the old media.

On March 9, readers of the venerable New Republic magazine were greeted by a brief essay by Hughes in which he introduced himself as the publication?s new owner and editor in chief. Hughes, who?d never run a magazine or been a journalist before, blandly promised to ?aggressively adapt to the newest information technologies without sacrificing our commitment to serious journalism.?

The surprise purchase touched off a low-level buzz in the power and money corridors of Washington and New York. Why was Hughes, now 28, bothering with the New Republic, a magazine with a long and storied history but a dismal present and recent past?

In the magazine?s K Street offices, meanwhile, Hughes was greeted as a kind of liberator and savior. Given that the magazine?s ownership had changed hands four times over the preceding five years, staff members viewed him as a stabilizing force. The optimism has so far been rewarded: Hughes has added more pages to each issue, bulked up the editorial staff and improved the print magazine?s laggardly delivery time.

?We?re young again,? says an optimistic Leon Wieseltier, who has overseen the magazine?s back-of-the-book cultural coverage for three decades. Hughes, he says, ?cares about books, about ideas, about the nature of the discourse. I have to tell you, it?s a spectacular relief. The pressures of the present moment in American journalism aren?t just economic; they?re intellectual, or rather anti-intellectual. I feel very confident in saying we?re not going to become quicker, fuzzier, faster. We?re reviving our old standards.?

In fact, Hughes himself has said little about his plans and goals (he declined to be interviewed for this story, pending a ?relaunch? of the magazine in the fall). And even after three months, insiders remain a little puzzled by their dashing new publisher. Some wonder if the magazine is a sideline or a lifelong commitment for Hughes, a hobby or a crusade.

They know Hughes has money, brains and time. What they don?t know is whether he has an agenda.

Making connections

As a kid growing up in Hickory, N.C. (population 41,469), Hughes seems to have known exactly what he wanted. He wanted to get out of Hickory, N.C. At 15, he applied to the exclusive Phillips Academy prep school in Andover, Mass., which came as a surprise to his parents, Ray, a sales manager for a paper company, and Brenda, a high-school math teacher. Hughes, an only child, won admission and attended the school with the help of a scholarship.
