Dear Papa: Letters to Hemingway get crucial repair

ANDOVER, Mass. (AP) ? The paper conservator's scalpel picked at the red and black specks, flicking away the fly droppings that had stained Ingrid Bergman's letter to Ernest Hemingway.

"I shall remember people like you and forget the rest of the world," the actress wrote to her author friend from Rome in 1950.

Six decades later, an effort to preserve that memory, and others that are part of the writer's legacy, recently began inside a New England lab.

From mold, to mice, to moisture, the JFK Library and Museum in Boston is trying to save its collection of Hemingway's incoming letters from different damage that has been degrading the batch as it ages. Box by box, thousands of letters to the author are heading to the Northeast Document Conservation Center in Andover for mending, washing, flattening and other repairs.

The center is a nonprofit that has also treated other parts of the Library's Hemingway collection, as well as materials including Abraham Lincoln's family Bible and documents George Washington wrote.

Walter Newman, the center's paper conservation director, said the goal of the current Hemingway project is to slow down the different processes that are degrading the letters. Experts surveyed the damage about 18 months ago, and restoration work started on a recent afternoon when assistant conservator Claire Grund went to work on Bergman's letter, among others.

"You can sort of pick them off," Grund said, her scalpel targeting the insect excrement by the "Yours Ingrid" signoff in the letter Bergman addressed to "My dear Mister Papa."

About half of the 7,500 letters in the incoming collection need restoration work. JFK Library's Hemingway curator Susan Wrynn said most letters are worth around $5,000.

Wrynn estimates the preservation project will take two or three more years and cost at least $300,000. The JFK Foundation is working on raising funds to cover the price.

After Hemingway's 1961 suicide, President John F. Kennedy made arrangements for the author's fourth wife, Mary, to go to Cuba during a U.S. ban on travel there. Cuban leader Fidel Castro let her reclaim some of her husband's documents and possessions in exchange for donating Hemingway's villa outside Havana and other belongings to the Cuban people.

Mary Hemingway shipped crates of documents on a shrimp boat to Florida, also retrieving papers from other places her husband lived, before offering the collection to Jacqueline Kennedy for her husband's presidential library.

The papers started arriving in Boston 40 years ago, when library officials stored them in a dark vault where they could control temperature and humidity levels. But that didn't keep iron gall ink, a corrosive and once-common writing agent, from eating through the paper some of the letters came on.

It also couldn't reverse mold growth or repair rodent nibbles on letters that spent years in storage in humid spots like Key West or Cuba. Letters penned on acidic paper also began falling apart as their fibers aged.

"His documents were kept in so many places over time. There are so many things that have happened to them," Wrynn said. "The deterioration just continues, so if you don't become proactive at some point, you have the potential to lose information."

Among letters needing repair are some from the writer's family, childhood cronies, and war and fishing buddies. Besides two of Bergman's letters, correspondence from Hollywood stars Marlene Dietrich and Gary Cooper will undergo work, as well.

Also slated for restoration are letters from Max Perkins, Hemingway's editor at Scribner's, and correspondence from writers Gertrude Stein, Walter Winchell and Martha Gellhorn, the journalist who became the author's third wife.

World War I-era dispatches from Agnes von Kurowsky, the Red Cross nurse upon whom Hemingway based his Catherine Barkley character in "A Farewell to Arms," also need saving from extensive mold, water and corrosive ink damage.

Handling the letters that belonged to the Nobel- and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer while boxing them for transport to the lab is a task library officials undertake with a focus and reverence worthy of holy relics.

"Your heart does kind of stop," Wrynn said in the midst of a recent boxing operation.

Among the next batch of letters that will head to the lab this fall will be four Western Union telegrams F. Scott Fitzgerald sent Hemingway from 1934 to 1937. In two of them, the writer talks about plans to visit his friend in Key West.

"Could make three day stay .... not up to anything strenuous probably result of teatotaling since January," he messaged Hemingway from Baltimore in May 1935.

But Hemingway was busy ? probably off chasing marlin.

A note on the telegram, believed to be handwritten by Hemingway's second wife Pauline Pfeiffer, showed Fitzgerald's suggestion was met with a return wire expressing regrets.

"Ernest in Bimini, forwarding your message, so sorry Love P," it said.

Google Play services bringing new OAuth tools to Android

Google Play services

Google is rolling out Google Play services starting today, bringing another of the great developer tools they showcased at Google I/O to the public.

For those of us that aren't developers, it's pretty easy to wrap your head around. If your device runs Froyo or higher and has access to the Google Play store, you'll have a new Google component to download. It's a set of libraries and tools that developers can use to authenticate with your Google account. When an app needs to access your private data from a Google application, they can use the new tool to get that access securely without requiring you to enter the (hopefully) long and secure password you use for your Google account. Version one of the service includes Google+ sign-in and +1 APIs as well as new OAuth 2.0 functionality.

OAuth 2.0 is a pretty big deal. It scales better than previous versions, is more secure, and as Googler Tim Bray notes "especially, because typing your password into a mobile device sucks". Bray has also posted an excellent overview, complete with code samples, using the new OAuth components at the Android Developers blog

Best of all, this will all be transparent to the end user. Once the required code is installed on your Android phone or tablet, the rest is up to developers. No more typing in your password on a mobile webpage, or getting a one-time password from Google two-step verification, we'll simply be able to choose the account we would like to use and go. We see that now with many of Google's apps, but the new method will bring it all together for a consistent -- and safe -- user experience using open standards.

The developer portion of the service is available now, and you can find all the info you need to start using it at the links below. The client side (what we'll need on out phones) should be rolled out completely in the coming weeks, and we'll start seeing apps use the service once Google announces the rollout is complete.

ATLANTA - Freddie Freeman hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to put the Atlanta Braves back in the playoffs with a 4-3 victory over the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night.

Freeman's dramatic drive off Mike Dunn clinched at least a National League wild-card berth for the Braves, who squandered a big lead in the wild-card race last year with a huge September collapse.

Longtime star Chipper Jones, who plans to retire at the end of the season, led off the ninth with a double. He moved to third on a wild pitch by Dunn (0-3) and scored when Freeman's 22nd homer easily cleared the center-field wall.

"There was never any doubt," Jones said during the clubhouse celebration. "We knew that last year was somewhat of a fluke."

Craig Kimbrel (3-1) worked a scoreless inning to help the Braves win their 22nd straight game started by Kris Medlen. The streak is the longest in the majors since the New York Yankees won 22 consecutive games started by Whitey Ford in 1950 and `53.

Returning to the postseason helps wipe away some of last season's frustration for the Braves, who blew an 8 1/2-game lead in the wild-card standings and finished September 9-18. They missed the playoffs after one of the biggest collapses in baseball history.

This year, Atlanta cruised most of the way and wrapped up a postseason spot with more than a week to spare. And the Braves still have a chance to catch first-place Washington in the NL East. They moved within four games of the Nationals, who lost to Philadelphia 6-3, with eight to play.

"We are shooting for the stars," Jones said. "It makes it all worth it. I'm happier for these guys because they worked hard."

While he was being interviewed on television, the 40-year-old slugger was doused with bubbly and beer by teammates in a jubilant clubhouse.

"I am so cold right now!" he said.

Four of the five NL playoff spots are secured. In addition to Atlanta, Washington, Cincinnati and San Francisco have all punched their tickets to the postseason.

The second-place Braves have a comfortable cushion in the wild-card race, and St. Louis leads the chase for the league's second wild card.

Free Your Budget With These Simple Tips to Reduce Credit Card Debt

If you are like most people, you probably have a credit card or two (or three, or four) sitting in your wallet or purse. In fact, the average Canadian carries a total credit card balance of over $3,200 at any given time. While this may not sound like a lot, credit card interest payments, fees, and penalties can eat at your monthly budget, making it difficult to save money or put it towards other more worthwhile expenditures.

If you?d like to free yourself?and your budget?of credit card debt, these tips will help you effectively put a credit card debt reduction plan in place:

Don?t incur more credit.

Paying down your credit card balances is a futile effort if you continue to incur debt. In order to see lasting benefits to your budget, you?ll need to stop charging things. Put your credit cards away in a safe place where they are not easily accessible and don?t stand as a temptation. A good rule of thumb is to reserve credit card use for emergencies (and no, the new designer handbag or latest gadget is not an emergency).

At the same time, resist the urge to open up new lines of credit just for the promotion, such as a percentage off your purchase. While you may intend to never use the card again, chances are you probably will.

Pay more than the minimum payment.

Minimum payments are not your friend. While they may seem like they?re saving you money each month, they?re actually doing just the opposite. Paying just the minimum payment on a credit card with a $700 balance, for example, will take you over six years to pay off, during which you will pay over $400 in interest. If you pay just $10 more a month on top of your minimum payment, you?ll pay your card off in less than three years and pay $188 in interest.

Put bonus money towards credit card debt.

Overtime or bonus pay, tax returns, birthday checks, and other unexpected forms of income that you don?t rely on to pay the bills are a great way to pay off your credit card debt even faster. If you find yourself the recipient of such a windfall, resist the temptation to splurge and put at least a portion of it towards your credit card debt reduction.

If your monthly budget is tight, chances are your credit card payments are eating up a good portion of your budget. You can break free of credit card debt by using these simple steps.

And you know what??Once those credit cards are finally paid off, you?ll have plenty of room in your newly revitalized budget to go buy that new purse or gadget with cash.

Won?t that feel great?

(AP) ? In the Central California coastal town of Marina, a $7 million desalination plant that can turn salty ocean waves into fresh drinking water sits idle behind rusty, locked doors, shuttered by water officials because rising energy costs made the plant too expensive.

Far to the north in well-heeled Marin County, plans were scrapped for a desalination facility despite two decades of planning and millions of dollars spent on a pilot plant.

Squeezing salt from the ocean to make clean drinking water is a worldwide phenomenon that has been embraced in thirsty California, with its cycles of drought and growing population. There are currently 17 desalination proposals in the state, concentrated along the Pacific where people are plentiful and fresh water is not.

But many projects have been stymied by skyrocketing construction costs, huge energy requirements for running plants, regulatory delays and legal challenges over environmental impacts on marine life. Only one small plant along Monterey Bay is pumping out any drinking water.

From Marin County to San Diego, some water districts are asking themselves: How much are we willing to pay for this new water?

"We found that our demand for water had dropped so much since the time we started exploring desalination, we didn't need the water," said Libby Pischel, a spokeswoman for the Marin Municipal Water District. "Right now, conservation costs less than desalination."

Desalination plants can take water from the ocean or drill down and grab the less salty, brackish water from seaside aquifers. Because of their potential impacts to marine life, the California Coastal Commission reviews each project case-by-case.

There was great fanfare in 2009 when the last regulatory hurdle was cleared to build the Western Hemisphere's largest desalination plant in Carlsbad, north of San Diego.

At the time, it was proposed that the $320 million project would suck in 100 million gallons of seawater and be capable of producing 50 million gallons of drinking water a day. It was expected to come online by this year.

Since then, the plant owner, Poseidon Resources LLC, has been negotiating a water purchase agreement and is close to clinching a 30-year deal with the San Diego County Water Authority, a wholesaler to cities and agencies that provide water to 3.1 million people.

The compact is essential for Poseidon to obtain financing to build what has become a $900 million project, which includes the seaside plant and a 10-mile pipeline. The San Diego agency hopes the plant opens in 2016 and anticipates desalination will account for 7 percent of the region's supply in 2020. It estimates the cost is comparable to other new, local sources of drinking water, such as treated toilet water or briny groundwater.

Interest is still high, but "people are realizing that desalination isn't a magic fix to the state's water issues," said coastal commission water expert Tom Luster.

Water can be de-salted in different ways. Poseidon's project will use reverse osmosis. Other plants shoot ocean or brackish water at high pressure through salt-removing membrane filters. Because pumps must be used constantly to move massive amounts of water through filters, these facilities are extremely energy intensive.

Also, in many cases, desalinated water is pricier than importing water the old-fashioned way ? through pipes and tunnels. And it is cheaper to focus on conservation when possible: new technologies like low-flow toilets and stricter zoning laws that require less water-intensive landscaping have helped curb demand in communities throughout the state.

Desalination has been around for years in Saudi Arabia, other Arab Gulf states and Israel, which last year approved the construction of a fifth desalination plant. The hope is that the five plants together will supply 75 percent of the country's drinking water by 2013.

The process also has helped ease thirst in places such as Australia, Spain and Singapore. Experts say it has been slower to catch on in the United States, mainly because companies face tougher rules on where they can build plants and must endure longer environmental reviews. Poseidon, for example, is facing opposition by environmental groups over its proposed plans to build another facility in Huntington Beach. The company has received several permits for the Orange County project, but still needs approval from the coastal commission.

About six miles south of the ghost desalination plant in Marina, the mechanical whir coming from a nondescript cinderblock building in a Sand City industrial park is the only evidence that the state's sole operating municipal desalination plant is at work.

The $14 million facility has the ability to produce up to 600,000 gallons a day of drinkable water for the town of about 340 people. Sand City's plant now produces half that amount each day; a third is used by the city with the rest sent elsewhere in Monterey County.

City leaders hoped to develop the former military town into an artsy, Bohemian beachside destination. With no other possible water options, they turned to desalination. "We're just like Saudi Arabia. There's nowhere else to get water and we want to develop," said Richard Simonitch, the city's civil engineer.

It's not that easy in Monterey Peninsula, where regional water use from development has exceeded its yearly rainfall replenishment and desalination is one of the only options available.

Proposals have been fraught with mistakes, political infighting and scandal, and have cost Monterey area ratepayers tens of millions of dollars.

Earlier this year, state utilities regulators rejected Monterey County's desalination plan, citing problems with environmental review. The plan was also mired in alleged corruption by a county water official, who now faces criminal charges.

Still, desalination will be an important part of the Central Coast's future: the state ordered water suppliers to stop drawing from the Carmel River, its main source of the precious resource, starting in 2017. Even officials in Marina, with its shuttered plant, see a future in which demand will require their current desalination plant to resume operation and are planning another, larger plant to help make up for the expected water loss.

"Water politics in Monterey County is a blood sport," said Jim Heitzman, general manager of the Marina Coast Water District.

Madoff victims get $2.48 billion more in payout

Shannon Stapleton / Reuters file

Bernard Madoff walks back to his apartment in New York in this December 17, 2008 file photo. The trustee liquidating his firm said the swindler's victims will get $2.48 billion in payouts to help cover losses, bringing the total payout to $3.63 billion.

By Jonathan Stempel , Reuters

Victims of Bernard Madoff's fraud will soon receive $2.48 billion to help cover their losses, more than tripling their total recovery to about $3.63 billion, the trustee liquidating the imprisoned swindler's firm said.

Checks ranging from $1,784 to $526.9 million were mailed on Wednesday to 1,230 former customers of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC, according to trustee Irving Picard. The average payout is $2.02 million.

Madoff's victims earlier recovered $1.15 billion, including sums committed by the Securities Investor Protection Corp, which helps customers of failed brokerages.

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Burton Lifland in Manhattan authorized the latest distribution last month following two legal victories for the trustee.

In June, the U.S. Supreme Court let stand a lower court decision that endorsed Picard's methods for calculating losses. In July, a former Madoff customer dropped a court challenge to a $7.2 billion forfeiture by the estate of Madoff investor Jeffry Picower. Of that sum, $5 billion would go to the Madoff firm's estate, and the rest to the U.S. government.

Picard has recovered $9.15 billion, or 53 percent of the $17.3 billion he believes was lost in Madoff's Ponzi scheme.

The trustee is holding some funds in reserve as some Madoff victims pursue their own cases to recover more money.

Picard said this litigation is delaying further distributions. The trustee is also appealing court decisions that have limited his claims against banks such as JPMorgan Chase & Co that did business with Madoff.

A spokeswoman for Picard was not immediately available to comment on the latest distribution.

The market for trading claims on potential recoveries from Madoff's estate will adjust for the distribution, according to Joseph Sarachek, managing director of claims trading at CRT Capital Group LLC, a Stamford, Connecticut-based broker-dealer.

He said claims that recently traded at around 69 cents on the dollar will likely soon trade in the 30s. "The Madoff market is fairly volatile," Sarachek said. "The real question is when people think the next distribution will be."

Lifland has authorized Picard and his law firm, Baker & Hostetler, to bill $321.2 million of legal fees to pursue Madoff cases for the period ended Jan. 31, 2012.

Madoff was arrested in December 2008 and pleaded guilty three months later. The 74-year-old is serving a 150-year sentence in a North Carolina federal prison.

The case is Securities Investor Protection Corp. v. Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of New York, No. 08-ap-01789.

Pest Control Portland - Controlling Insects Through Pest Control

One of the most important investments you have is your home. The amount of money that you have in your home probably dwarfs anything else besides a business if you are a small business owner. Because of this significant amount, it is essential that you take good care of your home and protect it from anything that can cause damage to it. Taking precautions by having home insurance is a good start, as it will protect your house from fires, floods, and other types of severe weather, but there is a threat that you may have never even thought of before: bugs. For these bugs, it is very important that you contact a company to do pest control Portland in and around your home.

The number one pest that can cause damage to your home is the termite. If you have never seen one before, termites are small brown bugs that feed on wood. As most homes are made of wood, termites would be a devastating pest. The best way to combat an infestation of termites, or any other type of pest is prevention. You will definitely want to take preventative measures so the pests never have a chance to do any damage. Also, once the pests have invaded your home, they will be much more difficult to get rid of. Pest control Portland professionals will be able to help you both prevent and get rid of these bugs, so you will want to contact an exterminator as soon as possible.

There are probably many pest control Portland companies in your area, so it will be in your best interest to do a little bit of research before you choose one to spray your home. One thing that you will definitely want to ask about, especially if you have small children or babies, is what they use to kill the bugs. Some types of bug spray can be toxic to children and to animals for that matter, so you will need to ask about any toxicity issues.

Another question that you may want to ask is how often the pest control Portland representative will have to come out to your home to spray. There are ome types of insects will need to be killed over a period of time with multiple appointments, so make sure that you ask how many treatments you need and how far they will be spaced apart.

4 ways Mitt Romney can defuse his '47 percent disaster'

Not everybody thinks Romney is toast for calling half the electorate moochers, but everyone agrees he has to do?something to right his campaign

At this point it's axiomatic to say that this has been a terrible September for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney: His campaign was already coming in for criticism before Mother Jones dropped a bombshell video of Romney telling wealthy donors that the 47 percent of Americans who pay no federal income tax are entitled, unrepentant moochers he has no plans to try to win over. Now, the knives are really out and, for their own self-serving reasons, "GOP wise men are rushing forward with Romney postmortems," says John Dickerson at Slate. Still, not all Republicans think Romney was wrong, substantively or politically, and seven weeks is a long time in a close-fought election. Here are four things Romney can do to move past his "47 percent disaster":?

1. Ride out the storm
"The problem with the whole 'the election is over' analysis is that it defies history ? and recent history at that," says Ed Morrissey at Hot Air. Four years ago, pundits wrote off Obama after his bitter-guns-and-religion gaffe, and "how'd that work out for Obama? Not too bad." Voters will decide, as they always have, "not on quips but on records and policy." Yeah, if Romney loses, "I don't think the surfacing of this tape will be looked back at as the reason why," says Philip Klein at The Washington Examiner. Some 93 percent of Americans think they pay the right amount or too much in federal taxes, according to Gallup ? in other words, few of us think we're part of Romney's mooching 47 percent.

SEE MORE: Anatomy of a campaign ad: 'The Romney Plan'

2. Change the conversation
Romney made a stab at this on Tuesday, frequently pointing to a 1998 audio clip, featured at the Romney-friendly Drudge Report, of Obama talking about wealth "redistribution." That fell flat, but Romney still "has nearly 50 more chances to change the narrative," say Glenn Thrush and Byron Tau at Politico. He will try to spin his "47 percent" remark to fit his message, but his best bet might be the huge ad-money advantage from Karl Rove's GPS Crossroads and other allied super PACs. It ain't over, says one Obama ally, "until Karl Rove sings." One "killer ad" could be a game-changer, says Ron Fournier at National Journal. But Team Romney will probably "figure out a way to pull out of this spiral and shift attention to a more positive narrative" on its own.

3. Shake up his campaign
"It's time to admit the Romney campaign is an incompetent one" and stage an intervention, says Peggy Noonan at The Wall Street Journal. This leaked tape is a perfect example of how Team Romney is "too small for the moment." Romney is loyal, so he'll resist change, but this isn't just about him, it's about the Republican Party and "a great political philosophy, conservatism." Romney needs to "look straight into the heart of darkness where lies a Republican defeat," then snap out of his malaise: Start campaigning like he means it, and most importantly, break out the pink slips. At the very least, it will give the media something else to talk about.

SEE MORE: Is Mitt Romney a neocon?

4. Give a big speech
Romney's framework, writing off 47 percent of voters, is "too small and pinched and narrow," says The Wall Street Journal's Noonan. But "the big issue ? how we view government, what we want from it, what we need, what it rightly asks of us, what it wrongly demands of us ? is a good and big and right and serious subject." And it calls for a "big, serious, thoughtful" speech. Yes, "a big speech (with specifics!)," says Chris Cillizza at The Washington Post. If Romney gives a "detailed-laden (or even detail-sprinkled) speech on what, specifically, he might do in his first 100 days to turn the economy around," the press would have to cover it. A clash of specific differences with Obama "is far more winnable" for Romney than this fight, and as a bonus, it would be good for our country.

A Wednesday Triplet of Treats: All the News; Your PIN Number; A ...

Every so often I feel free to post about things that have no direct connection to law but that are likely to interest our readers because they're tech- or research-related. Herewith three such things (the last of which, I confess, is merely delightful):

1. All the News

Incredibly, Brewster Kahle, that rare person with a vision large enough to run around in, has negotiated arrangements that let him, in the words of the New York Times story, put online at his Internet Archive:

every morsel of news produced in the last three years by 20 different [TV] channels, encompassing more than 1,000 news series that have generated more than 350,000 separate programs devoted to news.

The TV News site contains US material principally, but not exclusively: you'll also find old broadcasts from the BBC, Deutche Welle, Al Jazeera, France 24 and others I haven't yet found ? though no Canadian sources (what's the problem CBC?) other than CSPAN's "Canadian House of Commons." (A search in that last database for "law" brings up a video of Mexico's Vincente Fox talking, presumably, to the House.)

Astonishingly ? and delightfully ? a search produces not simply videos but transcripts as well, with search terms highlighted. This is a rich, daunting archive that will take some considerable time to learn.

2. Your PIN Number

Nick Berry on Datagenetics has an interesting and long post on those four-number codes you use to access your bank account (and other data). There are only 10,000 possible four-number codes, which makes it relatively easy to analyse our use of them. Clearly, Berry can't have access to our PINs, so he turns to a proxy for his analysis, "data condensed from released/exposed/discovered password tables and security breaches", in order to calculate such things as the most common (i.e. most predictable) and the least common codes.

The site's format is perhaps not the most conducive to easy reading, but the content is worth getting at. So check out his findings and make certain that you're not in the 10%, for example, who use the most likely PIN.

3. A Wide Wide World

The Datagenetics entry begins and ends with a cartoon from xkcd, whose virtues I've sung elsewhere and more than once. So I feel it's appropriate to refer you to today's xkcd cartoon, Click and Drag. To appreciate the comic you must do as instructed: when you get to the large frame, click and drag. And enjoy.

Association between drug, alcohol problems and mortality most prominent in younger veterans with PTSD, including those from Iraq, Afghanistan

Veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder who are also battling drug or alcohol problems face a higher risk of death, according to new research from the University of Michigan Health System and the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System.

The new study is the first to examine the association between drug or alcohol use disorders and death in veterans with PTSD, and also includes data from the nation's youngest veterans who have returned from conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Kipling Bohnert, Ph.D., the study's lead author, says the research sheds new light on the importance of treating both substance-use and post-traumatic stress disorders in veterans.

"Attention needs to be paid to veteran patients with PTSD, with an emphasis on identifying those who might also have a problem with drug or alcohol use," says Bohnert, who is a post-doctoral fellow at VA Ann Arbor and a research fellow at the University of Michigan. "This study highlights the potential importance of effective treatment for both conditions in helping veterans after they've returned from conflict."

Previous research on veterans has linked PTSD with higher risks of death, but this study is the first to highlight the association between substance-use disorders, PTSD and mortality. The study was published online in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence.

While the researchers found a significant link between substance-use disorders and death in veterans with PTSD across all ages, they also found that the association was most pronounced for the youngest group of veterans, including those from conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The youngest veterans, those 45 and under, showed a particularly strong link between substance-use disorders and both injury and non-injury related death. Injury-related death included homicides, suicides and accidents, while non-injury related deaths included heart disease, cancer and other health problems.

Bohnert says more research is necessary to figure out why younger veterans exhibit a stronger tie between substance-use disorders and death.

Federic C. Blow, Ph.D., the paper's senior author, the director of National Serious Mental Illness Treatment Research & Evaluation Center at the VA, says the research might be helpful for physicians in deciding the best way to treat their patients.

"In theory, a treatment program that addresses both issues substance use and PTSD should reduce the risk of death from all causes, and this may be especially true for the nation's youngest veterans," says Blow, who is also the director of the Mental Health Services Outcomes & Translation Section at the U-M Medical School.

Sony announces a slimmer PlayStation 3, launching this fall in black and white

A few years ago, Sony pulled the curtain back on a slimmed-down version of its PlayStation 3, and yet another Japan-only version since then. Today at the company's pre-Tokyo Game Show press event, the latest rumored redesign to the PS3 was announced. The new duo gets even smaller in stature and will arrive in stores with both black and white offerings, available in 250GB and 500GB models. The "charcoal black" one is given a September 25th launch date for the 250GB bundle (with Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception Game of the Year Edition) and a $269.99 price tag, while the "classic white" model arrives on November 22 (at least in Japan -- this is a TGS presser after all). For those looking for more storage space, the 500GB, charcoal-only option will be available on October 30th in conjunction with the Assassin's Creed III release -- no word on pricing just yet, though. Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House introduced the new model, calling it 50 percent smaller than the original (rather large) PS3, and 25 percent smaller than the slimmed-down version.

Sean Buckley contributed to this report.

Amazon brings Cloud Player music service to the UK: choice of free or premium tiers from 6 per year

Brits who've been straining for a reason to care about Amazon's budding Cloud Player service can probably relax. It's live in the UK as of now, offering 5GB of online storage and the ability to stream 250 of your tracks (or 256Kbps matched versions) to a range of devices free of charge. Adding extra storage will cost from £6 per year for 20GB, rising to £320 p/a for a full terabyte. If you're a heavy user, though, you may also need to fork out £22 p/a for the right to stream up to 250,000 of your tracks. Paying to play music you already purchased? Indeed, further exertion may be necessary to figure out if it's all worth it, along with a glance at the detailed press release after the break.

Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney waves to supporters during a campaign event at Van Dyck Park, Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012, in Fairfax, Va. (AP Photo/Pablo Martinez Monsivais)

(AP) ? Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney is expected to begin receiving regular intelligence briefings from the Obama administration in the coming days.

Senior aides report that the Romney campaign is nearing the conclusion of a required security clearance process. The former Massachusetts governor did not have to request the briefings. They are customary for major-party candidates after their nominating conventions.

With limited intelligence information, Romney struggled this week to respond in real time to a violent clash in Libya that left four Americans dead, including an ambassador. Before the deaths were confirmed, Romney mischaracterized the incident in his initial statement and accused President Barack Obama of a "disgraceful" handling of violence.

Romney has been relying on his foreign policy advisers and published news reports to inform his positions on world affairs.
