A few years ago when my husband started training for ultramarathons and started a running streak, I got stuck in a pattern that many ?runner spouses? get stuck in. The athlete?s nutritional needs go up, and everyone else around them ends up eating more too.
It?s like some sort of primal need to keep up. The athlete piles his or her plate full of food, the other person wants to do the same. Eating is often a social thing, and so we like to imitate those we are eating with. Ever have the experience of your friend ordering something at a restaurant that you didn?t even think of and saying ?I?ll have the same??
Here are a few tips for the running spouses out there:?
1) Remember that you might not be doing the same level of activity so it?s perfectly normal that you are eating less than your partner.
2) Stay hydrated! It?s so easy to over-eat when you?re parched.
3) Keep snacking to a minimum. That way, if you do eat too much at meal time, you?re not adding extra un-needed calories between meals.
4) Don?t fill yourself with liquid calories. Specialty coffees should be special and rare treats. Same for sodas and booze (but hey, I can?t fault you for that daily glass of red wine?)
5) And my best advice is to use a smaller plate! The eye can easily be fooled into thinking we?re eating more just by using a smaller pate. I do this often in my house ? Dwayne will use a big plate and fill it up, and I?ll use a little plate and fill it up. We both will feel full at the end of the meal. Problem solved!
One bonus tip is for ?fitness spouses? to join the Merry Fitmas challenge. It?s on now, and it?s not to late to join. In fact, it?s NEVER too late to join!
Tell me about it ? have you experienced this ?partner weight gain? when one of the two of you increases their exercise habits? What did you do about it? Let me know in the comments below.?
